Mary Ann Hawk Obituary Mary Ann (Hughes) Hawk passed away on April 12, 2025, at Avita, Ontario ICU. Mary Ann fought polio and scoliosis as a child and her health had been failing her for the last few years.
Mary Ann was born in 1943 in Cleveland to Shelby natives Gertrude (Katz) Hughes and Dale Cline Hughes. She was a graduate of Laurel School and Case Western Reserve University. She taught 1st and 2nd grade at Eastlake Schools in Willoughby for 8+ years before marrying and moving to Shelby.
In October 1974, she married the love of her life, Edwin Hawk. They would have celebrated their 51st anniversary this year, and she has missed him everyday since he passed away.
Mary Ann was a life member and was very active in the Garden Club of Ohio and as well as the Shelby Shade Tree Commission. She served for many years on the State Board of the Garden Club of Ohio and was a Master Landscape Design Consultant. She shared her love of plants by gifting them to those she loved. She also volunteered for the Salvation Army (Shelby Helpline) for 34 years. She wrote a number of articles for the Shelby Globe. In her younger years, Mary Ann enjoyed traveling, going to auctions, reading, history and gardening. She got to travel to many amazing locations all over the world with her parents, her childhood friend, Trina, and her husband. She loved to share those memories with us.
She was very artistically gifted and designed needlework kits and painted slates for Ohio Village in Columbus and for shops in Winston-Salem Hilton Head and Marthas Vineyard. She loved to paint and would do so on any surface she could find.
Mary Ann was very strong-willed, opinionated and made sure we knew what she wanted right up to her last few minutes. She passed peacefully and on her own terms.
She was so excited about becoming a great grandmother and was happy to share her excitement with everyone. She was very sad that she did not get to meet her great grandson.
Mary Ann is survived by her stepson, Trevor S. Hawk, daughter-in-law, Julia (McCafferty) Hawk, granddaughter, Erica (Tanner) Gerngross, great grandson, Tucker, brother-in-law, James (Debbie Jo) Starett, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and her sweet puppy, Lily Belle, who was of great comfort for her when her husband passed.
A very special, "Thank You" to Tanya Laser, who has helped and taken care of Mary Ann for over 20 years. "Thank You" to Julie Bashore and Ashley Fuller, who helped and lent a hand in recent years. You loved her like family and became cherished friends. Also, a huge "Thank You" to Julie Ensman for coming to Mary Anns house each week to set and style her hair when she could no longer travel to her salon.
Friends and family may come to honor Mary Anns life from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory. A funeral service will immediately follow starting at 6:00 PM with Mayor Reverend Steven Schag officiating. An interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shelby Shade Tree Commission Planting Fund at 43 W. Main St., Shelby, OH 44875 or Shelby Help Line at 29 1/2 Walnut St., Shelby, OH 44875.
Thank you to Mayor Reverend Steven Schag for coming to the hospital to pray for and with Mary Ann and to the entire staff at Avita Ontario for the compassionate care you gave to Mary Ann and to us.
