Mary Ruth Hidalgo, born on September 11, 1939, in Opelousas, Louisiana, peacefully passed away on May 28, 2025, at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana, at the age of 85.
Mary Ruth was renowned for her handmade crochet projects, channeling her creativity into beautiful crafts that brought joy to those who received them. Her culinary skills were also remarkable; she was particularly known for her delicious rice dressing, smothered okra for gumbo, and an array of baked treats, including fruit cakes and chocolate oatmeal cookies. Her homemade meals for her family showcased not just her talent, but her deep love and care for those she cherished. She was a devoted homemaker and caretaker, demonstrating her life to nurturing her family and serving as a private sitter for the public. She also had a love for animals where she exhibited her love for breeding poodles.
As a loving and caring person, Mary Ruth embodied the values of her devout Catholic faith. She prayed her Rosary daily and attended Mass regularly, reflecting her commitment to her spiritual beliefs and community. Her devotion to her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and interactions with those around her.
Mary Ruth’s life was marked by love, resilience, and deep dedication to her family. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by those who knew and loved her.
Friends and family are invited to honor her memory during the visitation, which will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Skip Montet Memorial Chapel at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas, located at 2845 S. Union St, Opelousas, LA 70570.
A Rosary will be recited at 11:15 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home led by Fr. Reed Bellingham with a Eulogy service to follow presented by Rick Soileau.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church located in Coteau at 2409 Coteau Rd, New Iberia, LA 70560. Fr. Reed Bellingham will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery in Coteau.
She is survived by her beloved children: three sons, Richard “Rick” Soileau and wife, Patti of Pollock; Randall “Randy” Soileau of Carencro; and Steve Soileau and wife, Sally of Alexandria; one daughter, Laticia Goulas and husband, Johnny of Breaux Bridge; two brothers, Ludrick Hidalgo and wife, Della of Denham Springs; and Byron Hidalgo and wife, Linda of Lafayette; sister, Ola Belle “Teeny” Hood and husband, Gordon of Denham Springs; ten grandchildren: Mallary Soileau and fiancé, Randy Smith; Samantha McMillan and husband, Mac; Casie Vanderlick; Maggi Robertson and husband, Kenny; Kayleigh Maturin and husband, Justin; Lauren Gaspard and husband, Brandon; Cody Boulet and wife, Stephanie; Lenzie Nguyen and husband, Tinh; Brandon Northcutt and wife, Macie; and Josh Goulas; sixteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elvin Peter Hidalgo, Sr. and Maire Ola Carroll Hidalgo; four brothers, Gene Hidalgo, Bubba Hidalgo, Gary Hidalgo, and Tommy Hidalgo; one grandson, Brice Boulet; and the father of her children, Bryan Soileau.
Pallbearers will be Rick Soileau, Steve Soileau, Randy Soileau, Cody Boulet, Ludrick Hidalgo, Byron Hidalgo, and Johnny Goulas.
Mary Ruth Hidalgo's legacy of love and care will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her dedication to her faith, family, and community will be remembered fondly by all.
