Mary Jenkins, of Farmington Hills, longtime owner of the iconic Greene's Hamburgers at the corner of 10 Mile and Orchard Lake Roads, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 14, 2025. She was 89 years old.
Born on July 3, 1935, in Madison, Tennessee, Mary was raised with strong family values and an independent spirit. After relocating to Michigan with her family, she graduated from Wayne High School in Wayne. It was here she began building a life defined by hard work, joy, and a deep commitment to those she loved.
In the mid-1970s, Mary and her beloved husband, Jake, purchased Greene's Hamburgers in Farmington Hills. With her trademark energy and love for people, Mary helped turn Greene's into a local institution, known as much for its classic sliders as for the warmth of the family behind the counter. Alongside her late husband Jake, her late daughter Debbie Sutton, and now her grandson Daniel Sutton, Mary poured her heart into the family business-always with a smile, a story, and a sense of fun.
Mary's motto in life was simple and sincere: "When you have the chance to have fun, do it!" She lived this philosophy daily, bringing laughter and life to every room she entered. Whether hosting a gathering, supporting a cause, or cheering on her great-grandson David-the light of her life since his birth 15 months ago-Mary led with joy. Her visits with David brought delight not just to her, but to the entire community at StoryPoint Senior Living in Farmington Hills.
She was deeply proud of her close-knit and extended family, and she fiercely loved each of them. Mary was an active member of the Farmington Elks and a generous supporter of the American Legion Post #346. Her presence was powerful, her generosity boundless, and her legacy enduring.
Spitfire, caretaker, and cornerstone-Mary will be remembered for her strength, spirit, and love of life. She leaves behind a family who adored her and a community who will miss her unmistakable spark.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jake, in 2010; her devoted daughter, Debbie (Randy) Sutton in 2019; and siblings, Estelle, Turner, Bettye, Ruby, Howard, Kelly and Ruth.
Surviving are her cherished grandson, Daniel (Kayla) Sutton; great-grandson, David Sutton; her brother, Jim Hundley, as well as generations of customers and friends.
Family and friends may gather at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington for visitation on Saturday morning, June 28th, from 10-11 am. Her funeral ceremony will commence at 11:00 am. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Farmington American Legion Post #346.
