Mary Kathryn Kolbe, age 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025. She was born on July 23, 1938, to Michael Joseph Shumsky and Emma Martha Korson in Leelanau, Michigan. Mary attended Saint Michael's Catholic School and later moved to Muskegon where she continued her studies at Baker College of Muskegon, graduating in 1957. She served as an administrative assistant for Muskegon Insurance Agency for 33 years. On May 22, 1963, she married the love of her life, Jack Kolbe. Mary was actively involved in various organizations, including Catholic Daughters, the National Association of the Physically Handicapped, and the National Campers and Hikers Association. Mary touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Her presence will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her loving daughter Mary (Paul Trombly) Knop; son, Matthew (Mickey) Kolbe; brother, John (Dora) Korson; sister, Martha Drier; four grandchildren, Kristopher Kolbe, Kathryn (Samantha) Brown, Kaley (Derek) Derks, Jeffrey Kroeze; three great grandchildren, Avery Kolbe, Rebel Kolbe, Avett Derks, and many dear family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack Kolbe; daughter, Martha Kroeze; brother, Michael Korson; brother-in-law, Dale Drier.
A funeral mass will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, located at 1110 Dykstra Road in North Muskegon at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the mass from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Mary will be interred next to her husband Jack in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
