Mary Elizabeth (Steeves) Landry, 96, of Winchester, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, April 25, 2025. The eldest daughter of the late Mary Cecelia (King) and Clarence Able Steeves, Mary was born in Cambridge, MA and was raised in Somerville. Mary attended the Cutler grammar school and graduated Somerville High School in 1946.
Determined to attend college, Mary commuted to classes at Salem Teacher's College, joining in for theater clubs and sports teams as well. With her sister Joan, who followed a year later, they sought out the fun. There Mary met her best and life long friends.
Mary's first teaching position was at the Parker School in Lexington where she taught 3rd grade. Her enthusiasm and creativity were robust and she delighted in sharing stories of her teaching days.
Mary raised her six children, at first in Somerville, and moved the family to Winchester in 1969. Mary was a talented seamstress and artist, and made a beautiful home. She loved to entertain and there was never a family event or holiday when Mary wasn't cooking, prepping, decorating and hosting a crowd of people. Mary was happiest amongst her large family and friends.
A decision midlife with a friend to join the Y in Woburn led Mary to a second round of lifelong friends. Walking Horn Pond became a regular activity both with her group, and with her husband Paul. The Y group became her Saturday morning coffee group which met up at Four Corners. She claimed it was the 30 years of regular exercise that was the reason for her longevity. We think it was her propensity for creating friendships and love.
Predeceased by her husband Paul, her two sisters, Joan Mahoney and Virginia Mills, and her best friend, Mary Delilse,
Mary was close to the last of her generation in our family tree.
Mary will be missed greatly for her quick wit, her sense of humor, her ability to listen and her willingness to do for others by her six children; Paul Landry and his wife Jennifer of Washington, GA, Janet Landry Shea and her husband Frank of Groton, Susan Landry of Watertown, Mark Landry and his wife Helen Durkin of Medway, Christopher Landry of Chesterfield, and Celia Landry Ceruolo and her husband Christopher of Winchester, as well as her beloved grandchildren, Michelle, Mark, Michael, Kate, Emily, Benjamin, Dylan, Stephen, and Elizabeth, and her two great-grandchildren, Alice and Graham.
She will be remembered by all for her indomitable spirit, her generous heart, her inclusive laughter, and magnanimous smile.
Relatives and Friends are kindly invited to gather at the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, MA, on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 9.30 a.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
