Mary M. Van Agtmael Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2025.
Mary was born in Portland Oregon in 1945 to Ward and Sally Nation.

She moved to Scio at an early age and while her parents operated West Scio Fertilizer, at the age of 8 she led the bean crew on the family farm. Though she was raised as an only child, she was surrounded by family - aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents, and dogs too! She later discovered she had three half-siblings (a sister and two brothers).

She was a graduate of Scio High School and attended Willamette University before meeting George C. Van Agtmael whom she married in 1964. She and George welcomed their only child, Mary Elizabeth in 1966 and they moved frequently throughout Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho for George's work as a millwright until settling back in Scio in 1980.

Mary served as Mayor of Scio, member of Linn County Planning Commission, Lions Club, Scio Historical Society, Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary and Rebekah's. Her volunteering encompassed various areas of interest within the community and had a significant impact on numerous individuals.

She took great pleasure in referring to herself as a "roaming Catholic" and frequented neighboring churches weekly for communion and fellowship in Lebanon, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, Oregon City, and even Tillamook.

She was preceded in death by both her parents and husband, George in 2017.

She is survived by daughter, Mary Nock, grandsons, Graham (Sharmaine) and Garrett (Riley), and great-granddaughter Severine. She also leaves behind a large circle of friends-including the furry variety of which she always had a bag of treats to share.

Rosary is scheduled at St. Mary's (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) Albany, OR on Sat. January 11th at 9:30 am and Funeral mass at 10 am, followed by a luncheon.

Donations may be made to: Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Mary's, 815 Broadalbin St SW, Albany, OR 97321, HVAC System

Mary, so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Praying for comfort with the knowledge she is walking with the Lord. I brought Aunt Mary out to Oregon and your mom and dad could not have been nicer. They both made me feel so welcome. I see in the obituary both Garrett and Graham are married. I remember when you came to MI for a conference and one of the boys spent the day with my mom. It is hard to believe both boys are married. BTW, I still have and set out every year, some wood carvings she made. Three different Santa Claus. She was so generous.
May the good Lord keep you in his loving care and comfort you as you navigate your life without your mom.
Love in Christ, Marlene Agle (Nuyens)
