Mary Mathew Obituary
Within her family and wider community, she was known as "ammachi." The word means both mother and grandmother in the South Indian language of Malayalam. In truth, she served as an "ammachi" to many communities.
She was born in 1927 in Kerala, India. She married Mathew Moozhayil on May 11, 1942. She became a widow 26 years later, at the age 41. Her resourcefulness, and her faith, enabled her to take care of 12 children on a shoe-string budget.
At age 60, she moved to the United States, where she lived for periods of time with each of her children and grandchildren. In 2000, she settled in northern California, where she would remain for the rest of her life.
The viewing will be held on Friday, August 1 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at St. Teresa of Calcutta in Livermore.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, August 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Walnut Creek, followed by the burial at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette.
