Mary McCarthy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral & Cremation Services on Mar. 2, 2026.
Mary (Mae) McCarthy passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026.

Mary was born August 27, 1931, in Mossblown, Ayshire, Scotland, to William and Mary Price. She was raised alongside her sister, Veronica (Robert) Adair, and her brother, William Price. In her youth, Mary attended St. Ann's and St. Margaret's schools and completed her education at the Troon All Girls College in Scotland. Following graduation, she was employed with the Hannah Dairy Research Institute.

In January of 1956, Mary met her future husband, Donald McCarthy of National Mine, Michigan, while he was serving in the United States Air Force and stationed at Prestwick Air Force Base in Scotland. The couple were united in marriage on April 22, 1957. Later that year, in October, they made their home in Ishpeming, Michigan.

After settling in Michigan, Mae began a long and dedicated career in the banking industry, where she worked for 33 years and advanced to the position of Bank Manager before retiring in 1993.

Mae was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming, where she served on the cleaning committee and generously assisted with funeral luncheons. She enjoyed reading and was a regular visitor to the Ishpeming Carnegie Library. She was also active in the Professional Ladies Business Club and shared her love of music as a member of the St. Paul Concert Choir in Negaunee.

She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Donald McCarthy; many friends and extended family, including her nephews, Steve Price of Ayr, Scotland, and David Skogman of National Mine, Michigan; her niece Lesley (Mark) Currie of Delta, British Columbia; and great-nephews Alex and Jack Currie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Mae's memory to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 325 S. Pine Street, Ishpeming, MI 49849.

Mae requested that private graveside services be held. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of the Marquette

County Medical Care Facility for the compassionate care provided.
