Mary McCue Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. - Dale City on Nov. 13, 2025.

January 7, 1938 - November 11, 2025
Mary Louise McCue died surrounded by her family the evening of Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at her home in Dale City.
Mary was the oldest child of Mary Rita (Marnett) and Stephen Michael McCue of New London, Connecticut. She grew up in a happy home with her brother Stephen (Diane) and sister Elizabeth (Henry) at 27 Fowler Ct. in New London. Grandmother Miriam FitzPatrick Marnett (Gustav) and aunt Anna Marnett Schaper (Fred) lived in the house in a third floor apartment. Cousins, aunts and uncles and nearby Long Island beaches made for a warm, secure upbringing. The deaths in 1953 of both Granny Marnet and her dad disrupted this happiness. But they stuck together with the support of family, especially Aunt Anna, and resumed life at Fowler Ct.
Mary graduated from New London High School and earned a nursing degree at St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford. Marriage took her in 1963 to Woodbridge, VA. Aside from one year when ex-husband served in Viet Nam, and she and the children lived back at Fowler Ct., Mary spent the rest of her life in Woodbridge and Dale City.
Back to nursing in 1977, she served for two decades in Potomac Hospital's emergency room, and then at Kaiser Permente, and finally at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Work in the ER led to involvement in efforts to improve travel safety and injury prevention. So Mary was involved in the Emergency Nursing Association and in ENCARE (Emergency Nurses Cancel Alcohol-Related Emergencies). She spent countless volunteer hours helping parents learn to use car seats, to use seat belts, and bike helmets. The work included training other medical professionals to educate the public on all these aspects of travel safety and accident precautions.
Mary was a faithful member of Holy Family Church. She served in the choir and as a eucharistic minister, particularly enjoying bringing communion to elderly and infirm parishioners.
She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She loved travel, and a refrigerator magnet collection documents the wide range of her travels.
She raised her three children on her own as devoted mother to Ann Marie, Edward, and Michael; mother-in-law to Linda; grandmother to Jim McCue (Martha), Donna Thomas (Nick), Jennifer McCue (Mason), and Rachel Louise Kohm (Luke); and great grandmother to Natalie Rose, Matthew Phillip, Eveleen Mary-Agnes, Emmet Robert, Ashlinn Francis, and Neal Michael. Into her 80s she could be seen on the floor playing with the young kids. She was loving aunt to nieces and nephews in New England, Florida, and Georgia.
Please in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Holy Family Church Food Pantry
