Obituary published on Legacy.com by Garner Funeral Home and Chapel - Monroe City on Nov. 12, 2025.
Mary Sue Shuck Mudd was born July 13, 1939 in Levering Hospital in Hannibal,
MO. to Lewis H. and Melvina (Nell) Hoover Shuck. She married John Daniel (Dan)
Mudd at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City on December 27, 1961.
Sue attended schools in Perry and Hunnewell and graduated from Monroe City
High School with the class of 1957. Sue then attended Kirksville State Teachers
College (now Truman State) graduating in 1961 with a B.S. in Education. She was
a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She taught for two years in Georgetown, IL. and
three years in Payson, IL. before accepting a position as the first lady P.E. teacher
at Monroe City High School where she got to teach in the new high school gym.
Sue taught girls P. E. and art for eight years prior to teaching K-6 art for a total of
34 years before retiring in 1997. She was also a faithful substitute teacher for 13
years after retirement. As elementary art teacher, Sue was instrumental in
making sure student work was always displayed in addition to decorating the
halls and gym for the Monroe Middle School tournament. Her students' art work
appeared on the programs and visiting schools always asked to take the
tournament murals for their school with them at the end of the tournaments.
Sue guided her students in decorating the stage for school plays and developing
themes for each classroom during the annual Open House, in general, providing
opportunities for students to participate and be recognized for their efforts. In
addition, Sue taught art at Hunnewell and Indian Creek schools for a time,
transporting art supplies to and from the buildings. She was the recipient of the
WGEM Golden Apple Award for teaching. Long time Superintendent Galen
Lankford always greeted her with "There's my art teacher." Sue fostered a love of
art among many students who might otherwise not have developed an
appreciation of the subject.
In her community, Sue started Arts in the Park and devoted many hours to
working on the Monroe City Mural, Queen of the Prairie. She organized Chalk Fest
for Monroe City and Holy Rosary elementary and junior high students, decorating
the sidewalk around
St. Jude’s Park. She also taught summer swimming lessons for
special needs residents. Sue received the Chamber of Commerce Community
Enrichment Award in 2006.
Sue loved gardening and family gatherings, especially baking her famous cherry
pie with cherries from her cherry tree. She was also a talented artist and crafter.
She and Dan loved travel, having visited all 50 states, 35 countries, and cruising
several times. They also enjoyed attending school events for many years after
retirement as long as their health permitted.
Sue was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where she made banners for
the altar and ran and supplied the Christmas booth at the Holy Rosary fall dinners
for several years.
She will be remembered for her devotion to family, faith, and community as well
as for her many talents.
Sue was a loving wife of sixty four years to Dan and proud mother of the late
Daniel Patrick (Julie) of Fulton, MO. and the late Gregory Bernard of New York City
as well as grandmother to Theodore Daniel Mudd and Bridget Louise Mudd and
