Mary S. Rief

Mary Solveig Rief, beloved wife of Steven G. Rief passed away on Sunday (11-17-24) with her loving family by her side. She was born on January 3, 1969, in Warwick, RI and has been a resident of Griswold, CT since 2002. She is the daughter of Solveig (Ludvigsen) Smith and the late Howard LaPorte.
Mary, a cherished wife, mother, and friend, passed away at home after a 2 ½ year battle with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. She was 55 years old. Mary was a woman of extraordinary beauty, both inside and out. Her infectious smile and compassionate heart touched the lives of everyone she met. She was a source of love, light and grace, and her presence brought joy to those around her. Mary was and active person who loved the outdoors and staying fit. She enjoyed weightlifting, running, biking, hiking and spending time in nature. She enjoyed boating and going to the beach. She also shared a passion for camping with her family, along with gardening and landscaping.
Mary was a talented and creative individual who loved collecting antiques, woodworking, and various arts and crafts. She was also an exceptional cook and baker, often preparing delicious treats for her family and friends. Mary was a devoted mother and attended her sons' sporting events with enthusiasm, always cheering them on and providing snacks for their teams. Besides her husband and mother, she leaves her two sons Aanders M. Rief and Soren G. Rief; three brothers Howard LaPorte, Todd LaPorte and Clark LaPorte. Also several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are Friday (11-22-24) from 4-7PM at Dougherty Brothers Funeral Home 595 Norwich Road. Plainfield, CT.
