Mary Scanlon (nee Browne), 92, of Haverstraw, NY, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025 with her loving family by her side. She was born on July 21, 1933 in Clonina, Cree, County Clare, Ireland to Stephen and Catherine (Cooney) Browne. Mary was known as a tireless worker whether it was milking cows on the family farm in Ireland, working as a nanny for a family in England, raising her own 5 children or supporting patients at Northern Riverview nursing home for over 35 years. When she wasn't working, her favorite pastimes were cheering on her children and grandchildren in their athletic and artistic endeavors, listening to traditional Irish music or sharing a cup of tea with family and friends. She was famous for her kindness, her scones, her devotion to the Blessed Mother and always reminding people that we are all God's children. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John; son, Johnny; daughters, Eileen and Kathleen; brother, Thomas Browne; and her sisters, Peggy Bunyan and Kathleen Downes. Mary is survived by her sons, Eugene (Eileen), Brendan (Erin), Thomas (Nicole), and William (Christine); and her adored grandchildren, Kiera (Phil), Kristen (Johny), Kailyn, Thomas, Madison (Seamus), Jack, Bridget, Deirdre, Sean, Megan, Liam, Kayla and Kaitlyn as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral Home, 133 Broadway, Haverstraw, New York, 10927. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mary on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, 115 Broadway, Haverstraw, NY 10927 with internment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Haverstraw. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. (BigsNYC/Donate)
