Mary Schweitzer Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 30, 2026.
Mary Jane Schweitzer (nee Huesman) passed away on March 13, 2026 at her residence in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born on September 8, 1937 in Covington Kentucky to the late Harry and Mary Eleanor Wilson Huesman.

Mary enjoyed being the oldest of six. She graduated from La Salette Academy and worked at the phone company until she married Frank Schweitzer in May of 1958. They led an active life, raising their son and daughter while moving around the country living in six states. She became a successful realtor and broker in Arvada, Colorado and continued when they moved to San Antonio, Texas. Iowa became her 7th state where she moved to be near her daughter.

Mary kept all the friends she made over the years and was a wonderful correspondent. She played on tennis teams for years as well as regularly ran, bicycled, swam, gardened, walked the dogs daily (2 sets of 2 poodles) and took gym classes (until March 2026!). Mary loved camping with Frank in their tent and later their VW van allowing them to hike and bird watch. She was very happy with her Iowa apartment's big windows, a place for her bird feeders and being able to walk into Hickory Hill Park which reminded her of her childhood in Kentucky.

Proceeding her in death was her husband of 64 years, Frank B. Schweitzer; her brothers William Huesman, Lee Huesman and Joseph Huesman and her brother-in-law, John Schweitzer.

Mary is survived by her son Michael Schweitzer (Natalie Ottobrino), daughter Susan (Michael) Phillips, granddaughters Megan and Corinne Phillips and brothers Donald Huesman (Junko Hondo) and Timothy (Edie) Huesman.

A mass and burial will be at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Independence, Kentucky on May 8th, 2026 at 10am. A light reception will follow at the church.

In tribute or in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Iowa City organization that helps people in need, CommUnity Crisis Services or the Iowa City bird organization Raptor Advocacy Rehabilitation & Education.
