Mary Elaine Shaw

MUNCIE – Mary Elaine Shaw, 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 8, 2026 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

She was born on April 5, 1926 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Earl H. and Marie D. (Lamy) Goodrich. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1944 and she attended Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, MA and North Adams State College in North Adams, MA . She married Milton I. Shaw on June 16, 1946 at St. Mary Catholic Church in San Francisco, CA.

Elaine worked for the Diocese of Springfield, MA at Notre Dame Parochial School for 11 years until her retirement in 1974. When she lived in Pittsfield, she was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Berkshire Museum Camera Club, Greylock Mineral Club, Conn. Valley Mineral Club and was a volunteer at Elder Services. After moving to Muncie, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Legion of Mary, St. Mary Women's Association, Daughters of Isabella and the Red Hat Society at Heritage Village in Yorktown.

She enjoyed photography, mineralogy, crossword puzzles, reading, playing Trivial Pursuit and Bingo. Her joy in life was spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Elaine is survived by two children, Michael G. Shaw (wife, Laura) of Stillwater, OK and Cynthia T. Nemser-Hall of Muncie; four grandchildren, Jeremy Nemser (wife, Kimberly) of Chattanooga, TN, Rachel Bacon (husband, Samuel) of Indianapolis, Kathryn Nash of Edmond, OK and David Shaw (wife, Alicia) of Oklahoma City, OK; six great-grandchildren, Delilah, Vivian, Cadence, Evelyn, Clare and Isaac Jude; two nieces, Renee Schneider and Terri Durlack; two nephews, Matt Goodrich and Andre Goodrich

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Milton I. Shaw on February 11, 2004 and one brother, Charles E. Goodrich; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Ray and August Milton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2026 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 2300 W. Jackson Street, Muncie with Father Andrew Thornton presiding. She will be entombed at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Pittsfield, Massachusetts at a later date.

Family and friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, 2300 W. Jackson Street, Muncie, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2026.
