MARY BETH SMART
LOUISVILLE - Mary Beth Smart, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Mary Beth was born in Haysville, Indiana on July 17, 1936, one of two daughters to Charles and Rosetta Klein. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, John L. "Jack" Smart.
A lifelong Catholic, Mary Beth was an active member of St. Barnabas (now Saint John Paul II) parish for over 60 years. She was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, IN; made her First Holy Communion at St. Ann Catholic Church in Louisville and was Confirmed at St. Ann. A graduate of Mercy Academy High School ('54) Mary Beth was a very active student participating in a wide array of activities including the bowling team, the drama club, the senior play, the glee club and the good counsel club. As a senior, her classmates voted her "neatest student."
Mary Beth worked at Dillard's (formerly Bacon's) Department Store for over 10 years.
Mary Beth was devoted to her family and cherished the company of her loving husband, children, grandchildren and many dear friends. She enjoyed many years of sightseeing travels and restful vacations across the US and Europe. Of particular fondness were the many annual vacations spent with her family in Hilton Head Island, SC.
She is survived by her four children: John L. Smart, Jr. (Leslie) of Lexington, Linda S. Graven (Gary) of Louisville, Michael C. Smart (Teri) of Louisville and Stephen J. Smart (Michelle) of Nashville, TN.; her sister, Sue Wessel (Art) of Muncie, IN; and grandchildren: Mike Graven (Sarah), Will Graven (Breanna), Tommy Graven, Lindsey Smart, Stephen Smart, Kathleen Smart, Charles Buddeke II, and Emily Buddeke.
Visitation will be 4pm - 7pm on Monday, May 6th, 2024 at Highlands Funeral Home (3331 Taylorsville Rd, Louisville, KY 40205 ). Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (501 Cherrywood Rd, Louisville, KY 40207) at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
