Mary Beatrice Smith Marshall was born October 27, 1934 to the late Elizabeth Jenkins Smith and John Wesley Smith, Sr., in New Castle, Kentucky. She entered her eternal rest surrounded by her children and grandchildren in the evening hours of Wednesday, August 28, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Ms. Mary B., as she was affectionately known by the community, was a graduate of Lincoln Institute in 1952, where she was a standout track and field athlete. With her passion for athletics and her love for children of all walks of life, she was instrumental in the start of youth soccer in Shelbyville/Shelby County. She encountered, mentored and coached thousands of children every year. Many of those children she coached, she eventually, as years went on, would coach their children and their children's children. It was a revolving door of Coach Marshall giving back to her community. Not only was she instrumental in soccer but had a hand in softball and t-ball/baseball programs, too. Mary was honored for her dedication to the youth of Shelbyville/Shelby County Parks by having a soccer field named in her honor and presented to her on April 13, 2004. She was also inducted into the Shelbyville Hall of Fame for Track and Field. When Mary was not involved with her community's children, you could find her in Shelby County Blue and Gold supporting and cheering on her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, her brother, John W. Smith, Jr, her sisters, Ella Smith Roberts and Hallie C. Smith and one grandson, Donovan Marcellus Marshall Johnson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children, Anna Lorraine Jackson of Shelbyville, Patrick Dawson Marshall of Chicago, IL, James Michael Marshall of Simpsonville, Lucille Lynne Marshall of Shelbyville, Gwenella Carroll Marshall of Shelbyville, David Wesley Marshall (Tara) of Cincinnati, OH and Sandra Katherine Marshall of Shelbyville; her grandchildren, Jonathan Jackson, Kereka, Joshuah Marshall, Candis Marshall, Charlotte Marshall, Ryne Marshall, Jon Michael Marshall, Jalynn, Wesley Marshall, Lauryn and Leslie Williams (Jason); her great-grandchildren, Devon, Kaylan, Branden, Avion, Camdyn, Alonie, Parker and Paisley; her great-great grandchildren, Kayonna, Malajia, Nasir and Devyn; her sister, Lillian L. Tucker (Milton), her brother, William E. Smith (Wanda) and her sister in-law, Henrietta Smith; her extended family, the Scotts, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Shelby Christian Church with visitation 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the church. Rev. Ronald Walker will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at G.U.O.O.F. Cemetery in New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Shelby Congregational Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1526, Shelbyville, KY 40066-1526.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Webb Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.webbfuneralhome.com.
