Mary Catherine Smith, a beloved matriarch and respected caregiver, departed this world peacefully in her sleep on January 16, 2026, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Born on September 2, 1931, in Lambertville New Jersey.  Her journey through life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family, her profession in nursing, and her strong Christian faith.

A graduate of Easton School of Nursing in 1952, Catherine devoted her career to nurturing others. It was a calling she embraced with passion, delivering babies and working with the mentally ill, ultimately retiring in 1995 from Highsmith-Rainey Hospital, where she served in the Cardiac ICU. Her steadfast commitment to the health and well-being of her patients earned her profound respect within the community. Inspired by her neighbor, Mrs. Johnson, Catherine pursued her nursing ambitions with all her heart, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched.

Catherine was an extraordinary wife, mother, and grandmother, continually providing love and support to her family. As a dependable and loving matriarch, she ensured that her home was a sanctuary of warmth and care. She was an active member of her Sunday School class at Northwood Temple Church, where she learned to share her strong Christian faith through Evangelism Explosion. Her generosity was boundless; she cherished the moments spent with her family and friends, always ensuring that they were remembered on special occasions with loving cards and thoughtful gifts.

Her vibrant presence was enriched by her love for soap operas, a hobby that brought her joy and allowed her to unwind after a long day of caring for others. Her wealth of knowledge was not just limited to her professional life; she was well-loved for her intelligence and willingness to share her wisdom with those around her. Her kindness and caring nature resonated deeply within her community, leaving a legacy that will be cherished for generations.

Catherine joins her beloved husband, Russell J. Smith, her son, Douglas Smith, her granddaughter, Stephanie Spangler, her sister, Carolyn Smith, and sons-in-law, Wayne Spangler and Harold Seiple who have preceded her in death. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Marjorie Seiple, her grandsons, Phillip Spangler, girlfriend Katie and Matthew Spangler and fiancé Angie, her daughter-in-law, Sharon Hinton-Smith, dear friend Mike Bright, and numerous nieces and nephews who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

Mary Catherine Smith’s extraordinary life was a testament to love, service, and faith, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and enduring love for all those who were fortunate to know her.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 11:00am until noon at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service followed by a memorial service at noon in the chapel. A private family burial will follow the service.
