Mary Theresa Koop Sowder, 79, of Whites Creek, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, after a long illness. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the loving wife of Don Sowder and a devoted mother to Jennifer Lineberger, Amy Cochran (Darren), Vicki Wilbanks (Keith), and Rachel Sowder. Her memory will be cherished by her six grandchildren: Grace Cochran, Cole Lineberger, Jamison Wilbanks, Drew Lineberger, Jackson Wilbanks, and Janette Wilbanks, who brought her great joy.
Mary is also survived by her siblings Karen Begley (Bill) and Clarence “Butch” Koop (Amy). She was preceded in death by her brother Michael Koop and parents Clarence and Mary Ida Koop.
A graduate of Mt. Notre Dame High School in Cincinnati, Mary worked as a bus driver for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools for 21 years, retiring in 2006. After retiring, she and her husband, Don, traveled to 44 states, enjoying new experiences and making lasting memories. Mary was an active member of several church communities and found peace in quilting, sewing, reading, and relaxing on the beach.
Her family is grateful for the time they shared with Mary and finds comfort knowing she is now free from pain and suffering. While she will be deeply missed, they take solace in the hope that she is at peace, reunited with loved ones, and watching over them from heaven.
Mary will be laid to rest in a private family gathering at Larkspur Conservation Burial Ground in Westmoreland, TN, according to her wishes. No public visitation or ceremony will be held.
The family appreciates condolences and prayers from all those who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family suggests supporting Larkspur Conservation’s mission via a donation in Mary’s honor. Donations may be made at the link below.
