Eleanor Sowder Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by G.H. Herrmann Funeral Homes - Madison on Dec. 24, 2025.
Eleanor L. Sowder, 92, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025.
Eleanor was born on August 20, 1933, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to the late George and Carolyn (Fishel) Weimer. She was a lifelong resident of the Indianapolis area and remained deeply connected to her community throughout her life.
A woman of strong faith, Eleanor was a devoted member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, where she faithfully attended services and shared her love of music as a member of the church choir.
Eleanor was a true social butterfly who greatly cherished the friendships she built over the years. She loved spending time with her friends and was happiest when surrounded by good conversation and laughter. She had many creative interests and especially enjoyed quilting, sewing, and crocheting, talents she practiced with care and pride. In her younger years, she also enjoyed attending dog shows.
Eleanor was actively involved in organizations that reflected her generous spirit and commitment to service. She was a member of the Quilters Club, where she found joy in both creativity and fellowship. She was also deeply involved with the Girl Scouts, serving as both a member and a leader. One of her greatest joys was traveling with the Girl Scouts on their Scoutabouts, which allowed her to visit several destinations outside of the United States while mentoring and encouraging young girls along the way.
Above all, Eleanor treasured time spent with her family. She greatly enjoyed supporting and attending her daughter's and grandson's activities and took pride in being present for the moments that mattered most to them.
Eleanor leaves behind to treasure her memory her daughter, Vicki Day, and son-in-law, Kevin Day; her beloved grandson, Daniel (Sarah) Day; and her cherished great-grandson, Colton Day.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Sowder, in 2018; two brothers, William "Bill" Weimer and Francis "Fritz" Weimer; and her sister, Helen Hessman.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at G. H. Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor her memory, share stories, and celebrate a life well lived from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. She will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions in Eleanor's memory may be made to the Girl Scouts.
The family invites those who knew Eleanor to share their memories, photographs, and condolences online, helping to honor her legacy and keep her memory alive.
Though her hands are at rest, her legacy lives on in every smile she inspired and every life she touched.
