FREDERICKTOWN - Mary Josephine Steele of Fredericktown passed away Friday, August 22, 2025, at Southbrook Skilled Nursing and Rehab at the age of 74. She was born in St. Louis on July 25, 1951, to the late Joseph Damazyn and Louise (Wissinger) Damazyn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, George Steele, on December 24, 2024, and her brother, Paul Damazyn.
Mary Jo was an outgoing person who was always welcoming and helpful. She was uplifting, generous, and kindhearted. She was a twenty-year employee of Steak 'n Shake of Farmington. In 2013, she retired from working there as a dedicated general manager. She was also responsible for helping with the management of the surrounding Steak ‘n Shake locations. Anyone who knew Mary Jo knew that her work ethic was boundless.
In her spare time, she loved flower gardening. She was a true nature lover who enjoyed her hummingbirds, traveling, her roses, and canning vegetables. Her family will fondly remember her wonderful southern-style cooking and baking.
Survivors include her two children, Steve (Robin) Steele and Melissa (Steve) Mezzano; great-grandchildren, Randi Smith, Kinley Burch, Tuff McDaniel, and Trueitt McDaniel; her siblings, Judy Adams, Frank (Mary Kay) Damazyn, Emma Glass, Eddie (Joanne) Damazyn; sister-in-law, Karen Damazyn; numerous nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
There will be a visitation at Cozean Memorial Chapel on Thursday, August 28, 2025, beginning at 3 p.m. until the funeral service at 7 p.m. in the Cozean Chapel with Pastor Tim Morgan officiating. Interment will be held on Friday, August 29, at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
