Mary Y. Steier, formerly of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024, at the age of 92 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born in rural McDowell County, West Virginia to John Yorkowski and Anna Jacom Yorkowski. Mary moved to Louisville at the age of 17, where she graduated from High School and married Virgil E. Steier.
Throughout her life, Mary was deeply devoted to raising her family and was the consummate homemaker. She was a PTA President and Cub Scout Den Mother. State Park family vacations and campfire breakfasts were cherished family times. Mary was the family social director and even convinced Virgil to join a Square-Dancing Club, homemade costumes and all. Mary taught herself to cook and bake and became the master of Christmas Cookies, baking thousands each year to share with family and friends. Her customized Christmas stockings are legendary and are another way Mary used her creative talents to show her love to so many.
During her later years in Cincinnati Mary easily made new friends and settled in as an ambassador and Domino Night leader at her retirement community. Mary's commitment to her family was matched by her dedication to her faith. Mary started attending a Methodist Church by herself at the age of 10. Her fondest memory of this church was the orange she received from the congregation. Later Mary was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Louisville and Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church in Indian Hill, Ohio. Her faith was a source of strength and optimism, and her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 118:24, "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.".
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Virgil E. Steier. She was a devoted mother to Gary (Martha) of Montgomery, Ohio, and David (Larysa) of Gainesville, Georgia. She was a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, affectionately known as "Gran". Mary is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care teams at Arden Court of Kenwood and Suncrest Hospice. A memorial service is being planned for February 2025 at Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church.
