Mary Steitz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stoess Funeral Home on Aug. 6, 2022.
Obituary
Mary Anne Steitz (Ferry) passed away peacefully on August 5, 2022. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on
May 20, 1942 to George Paul Ferry and Anne Elizabeth Ferry (Madden). She grew up in Lawrenceburg,
Indiana with her parents and five siblings George Paul Ferry Jr., Thomas (Tommy) Madden Ferry, James
(Jimmy) Patrick Ferry, Sheila Ann Ferry (Merk), and Elizabeth (Betty) Susan Ferry (Andrews).
After graduating from Lawrenceburg (IN) High School in 1960, she earned her Nursing Diploma from
Saint Joseph Infirmary School of Nursing in Louisville, Kentucky in 1963. Thereafter, she began working
as a nurse and eventually became Head Nurse of the Thoracic Unit.
In 1965, she met her future spouse John Sheridan Steitz and they were wed on April 27, 1968. Together
they had two children Catherine Anne Steitz (Crady) and David Sheridan Steitz. After the birth of her
children, she stayed at home to raise their children.
Eventually Mary Anne discovered her love of tennis and was active in the sport for nearly 30 years. She
participated in USTA events and helped grow the senior leagues in Louisville. In 2000 she was named
KTA Local League Coordinator of the Year. Her senior teams represented the State of Kentucky several
times in regional play and even made the national finals in 2001 in Palm Springs, CA.
Family trips and vacations brought her great joy throughout her life as well as spending time with family
any time she could. She especially adored her grandchildren and was her granddaughter's "Dancing
Queen." Her dogs were an important part of her family for over 45 years. She was an avid reader for
most of her life. They spent several winters in Venice, Florida at their second home making new friends.
She hosted many family events and loved to entertain her family and friends.
Her common sense, sage advice, wonderful cooking, organization, and humor will be missed by all those
that were fortunate enough to get to know her.
She was proceeded in death by her parents and her brothers Tommy and George. She is survived by her
husband John, her two children Cathy (Mike) and David (Catherine), her three grandchildren Sarah
Catherine, Kyle Michael, and Sean Matthew, her three siblings Jimmy (Rosie), Sheila (Ritch), Betty
(Charles) her sisters-in-law Sandi Ferry and Millie Kraus, her brother-in-law Steven Steitz (Niki) as well as
numerous nieces and nephews.
