Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southern Indiana ChapelMary Elizabeth Stubbins, passed away on October 13, 2025, at the age of 100. She was born on April 2, 1925. Mary had a rich life full of experiences and contributions to her community.
Mary began her education at Division Street School, where she attended from the first to sixth grade. She then continued her studies at Scribner High School, an all-Black school at the time, graduating in 1944 when schools had not yet been integrated.
Throughout her life, Mary worked as a dedicated caregiver, providing support and care to those in need. She was an active member of Howard Chapel Baptist Church, joining in 1943 under the leadership of Pastor Rev. Randolph Mason. Within her church community, she sang in the choir, now known as the United Voices of Praise, taught Bible Teaching Union (BTU), and engaged in arts and crafts. She devoted many years as the treasurer of the Missionary group, participated in the Women's Ministry, and was instrumental in documenting the history of the church.
Mary worked diligently throughout her life and continued to participate in her church activities until she reached the age of 85, when she chose to sit back and listen to the messages she held dear.
She is preceded in death by her father, Adolph Milton Stubbins, her mother, Lora Mae Stubbins, and her siblings: Addison Duncan, Audrey Thomas, Edward Stubbins, Milton Stubbins, Robert Stubbins, Charles Stubbins, Norman Stubbins, Walter Stubbins, Thornton Stubbins, and Delmar Stubbins.
