Mary Margaret Such, lovingly known as “MawMaw,” made her beautiful journey to heaven riding on a giant turtle, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on October 25, 1944, in Trenton, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ruth Taylor. Mary lived a life full of laughter, generosity, and unforgettable stories, always the life of the party and always able to command a room with her presence.
For many years, Mary worked at the legendary Satellite Lounge in New Jersey, where she served the town with a smile and had the privilege of seeing countless great musicians perform. It was there she met the love of her life, John George Such Sr. The two traveled the world together before settling in Powdersville, South Carolina, in 1988, where they built a beautiful life with their family.
Mary later found her true calling at Wren Middle School, a place she dearly loved, where she worked as the attendance clerk. She never hesitated to go above and beyond for her students, especially those in need, often taking them shopping herself or covering lunch debts to ensure they had everything they needed to thrive. She kept every card, drawing, letter, and handmade memento her "kids" have treasured. No matter where she went, stores, restaurants, appointments, she could always be recognized by the joyful shout of “Mrs. Such” followed by hugs and stories of the difference she made.
Mary’s happiest days were spent in Myrtle Beach with her grandchildren, riding around in her golf cart, decorating it for the Fourth of July, and tossing candy and toys during the parade. She loved a good prank and kept everyone guessing what she would do next. She never met a stranger and made it her mission to make someone smile every single day, whether through a compliment, a joke, or a conversation in passing.
She was known affectionately for her lifelong love of turtles, caring for live ones, and surrounding herself with drawings, photos, and figurines collected through the years. She was also an incredible caretaker for her husband during his final years, showing unwavering loyalty and love. Her beloved Chihuahua, Pinky, also known as Bubbles, was her constant companion and adored friend.
Mary is survived by her pride and joy, her son John George Such Jr, and his wife Yvette of Simpsonville, South Carolina; her stepson Jonathan Such and his wife Lincy of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and her treasured grandchildren Nikole Such, Sara Such, Nathaniel Such, Angela Such, John Thomas Such, Bryson Such, and Jezreel Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her husband John George Such Sr, her parents, her stepson Todd Such, and her siblings Frank and Suzanne Taylor.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 5th, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Robinson Funeral Home - Powdersville Road. In honor of Mary’s love for turtles, the family has requested guests wear a touch of green if possible and available. They would also love it if, in the spirit of Mary and her love for her "kids," friends bring an unwrapped stocking stuffer for the children in need at Wren Middle School to donate to their toy drive if able.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or a local soup kitchen, causes close to Mary’s heart.
