Mary Diane Thomas, 82, of Summerville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29th, 2025.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, June 9th, 2025, from 1pm to 3pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 South Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483. Interment will be held at a later date at Beaufort National Cemetery.
Diane was born on November 13th, 1942, in Port Allen, LA, a daughter of the late Mary Edna Levert and August Gassie Levert. She attended Port Allen High School before joining the US Navy. Diane served four years in the US Navy, which is where she met the love of her life, Herbert Lewis Thomas, and they spent 60 plus years together! The first time Mr. Herbert met Diane, he told her he was going to marry her; she said she wasn't too impressed but she did! In 1962, a pilot at Whiting Field flew her on a T-38 training plane, this was unheard of during this time! She enjoyed many things in life including traveling, card playing and spending time with her beloved family. Diane worked in the Human Resource department for the Charleston Post and Courier for many years until her retirement. Following retirement, she was on the board of the Senior Center in Dorchester County and also volunteered at Second Chance Thrift Shop in Summerville. She was known to be the life of the party and hardly ever met a stranger, even at the end, she still made friends. Diane was a strong-willed hardworking woman with a true heart of gold. She was a much beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend who will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her loving children: Christopher Quinn Thomas (Andrea), Jeffery Lewis Thomas (Kelly Larimer), and Jennifer Lyn Hammond (James); her grandchildren: Anderson Coker (Carly), Sonny Coker (Julie Anna), Marlow Thomas, Reid Thomas, Mallory Hammond, Madelyn Hammond, and Maggie Hammond; her great grandchildren: Karson Ann Coker and Banks Coker; her siblings: Thomas Levert, Jenny Gauthe, and Michael Levert; as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; as well as her siblings: Gus Levert, Noel Levert, and Ronald Levert.

I also worked with Diane at the Post and Courier. She was such a kind and considerate person. She was very diligent in her work, but her desire to help and support is what I will always remember about her. Even after Diane retired I would see her or hear from her as she was doing fund raising for the Senior Center or helping families with one or another misfortune. Always giving! She will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. I hope your memories bring you comfort and time helps with your loss.

Diane was a true friend and co-worker at the Post and Courier. Always enjoyed catching up with her at our Golden Girls luncheons. My grand daughter and her twin granddaughters were born within days of each other so we shared a special bond sharing their accomplishments as they grew up. She and I both loved our Hondas. She always wanted to go out for lunch at least once a week. Definitely going to miss her and our good times together. She had a heart of gold and a heart-warming smile. The world was definitely a better place with her in it.

My prayers and thoughts to Diane's family. I worked with Diane at the post and courier and became good friends with her until we both retired. I am saddened that I didn't get to see her in our later years but we did speak on the phone occasionally. I will always remember her with love . Rest in peace my friend.
