Mary Elizabeth Upshur Williams, 87, of Eastville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter, Patricia, in Trehernville, Virginia.
Mary was born on July 16, 1938, in Marionville, Virginia, to the late Cora Harmon-Upshur and James Bailey. She was the seventh of ten children, a place in the family that shaped her strength, humor, and deep devotion to those she loved. She is survived by her little sister Louise, who shared every moment they could together, especially their first of the month trips and late-night phone calls filled with memories and laughter.
In her journey through life, Mary married the love of her life, Rufus Williams. Together, they had seven children. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Nathaniel, step-daughter Phyllis, step-son Ivan, son-in-law Joseph Campbell (Lillian), and a set of fraternal twins born sleeping in 1960.
Mary's legacy continues through her loving children: Patricia, Lillian, Laura, Chester, Leticia, and ShaQuana (Edward), as well as her loving step-children, James and Ellen. Fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren, two sister-in-laws, Kiwi Upshur and Ellen Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, each of whom she cherished deeply. Among them are the memories of her grandsons, Derrick and Deondra (Tony), and her great-great-grandson, Xion, who all preceded her in death.
She was affectionately known for her nurturing spirit and had a special hand in raising several of her grandchildren, including Davon, Deonte (TyShia), Davonte (DJ #1), ShaKinah (Patrick), Alonzo, Quentin, and Detron (DJ #2), who shared a deep and unique bond with her. She also cherished her great-grandchildren, Diore, Deshawn, and Nia, who were constant joys in her life. Beyond her immediate family, Mary's heart and home extended to countless others. She helped raise and guide many children throughout her life, leaving a legacy of love, wisdom, and community that will never be forgotten.
Mary was a devoted woman of faith and served faithfully as the Church Mother of Transformation Ministries, where she inspired, encouraged, and prayed lovingly over many. The love she had for her church family was immeasurable, and we thank you.
In her final months, Mary was lovingly cared for by her four daughters and granddaughter, ShaKinah (Nae-Nae), whose devotion and presence brought her comfort and peace. The family also wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Bishop JoAnn McCrary, Riverside Hospice, and all the family and friends who did not hesitate to visit, call, pray, or cook a meal during this time. Your love and kindness will never be forgotten. Special love and appreciation go to her nieces Francethia, Victoria, Irene, Darlene, cousin Betty, and friend, Maggie Custis (Mickey), who made it a daily routine to see her every day or as often as they could.
Mary's legacy is one of strength, faith, and unconditional love. She will be remembered for her generosity, her amazing smile, her laughter, and the way her door-and her heart-were always open.
