Obituary for Mary Gladys Wilson
Running Her Race
Mary Gladys Wilson, an identical twin, was born to Hardy and Etta in December 102 years ago, just shy of her 103rd birthday. She and her sister were the third and fourth of six children in a loving, God-fearing home in Memphis, Tennessee. The family worshiped at Philadelphia Baptist Church, where Gladys' faith was nurtured from an early age.
Gladys met, fell in love with, and married Napoléon Wilson in the parlor of her parents' home on December 26th in Tennessee. Within a few years, they welcomed their first two children, Ruth and Napoleon Jr. When Napoléon enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington for a time. After his discharge, the family settled in Pasco, Washington, where their family grew with the births of Verdell, Cynthia, and Elaine. During those years, Napoléon worked in construction while Gladys worked as a housekeeper-both dedicating themselves to providing for their young family.
In 1960, the Wilson family made their next and most significant move to
Ventura, California. They quickly found a spiritual home at Olivet Baptist Church, where Gladys' faith and service flourished. Their family was made complete with the birth of their youngest daughter, Earnestine. Gladys became deeply involved in both her community and her church family, offering her time, compassion, and steadfast devotion.
During her retirement years, Gladys continued to give of herself-first by providing babysitting services for friends and family, and later as a part-time caregiver for the elderly. The love and gentleness with which she cared for others was unmistakable, and every family who trusted her with their loved ones knew her care was sincere. Gladys also understood the importance of staying active and became an avid walker, embracing each day with vitality.
Gladys endured the heartbreaking losses of many dear family members over the years, including her beloved husband, Napoléon; children Ruth and Napoleon Jr.; all of her siblings; and grandchildren Clayton, Jaden, DeVon, and Bryant, along with many other cherished relatives. Through every loss, her faith remained strong. She continued to love God, her family, her friends, and her church with unwavering devotion.
She leaves behind four children, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will forever cherish her legacy of faith, strength, and love.
All our love and God bless you, Mom.
