Mary Wright-Butler Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lasting Tributes Cremation and Funeral Care, P.A. on Sep. 25, 2025.
Mary Angela Wright Butler, affectionately known as "Ann," was born on July 1, 1932. On Monday, September 22, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., Mary peacefully passed away at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Columbia, Maryland. We believe she was not alone - someone surely took her hand, told her not to be afraid, and gently led her to a beautiful place. Mary spent 38 joyful years in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, settling in Pasadena on Crystal Palace Lane in 1987. When her health began to decline, she moved to Brightview Senior Living in Crofton, then to Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Severna Park, and finally to Gilchrist Hospice Center, where she spent her final days with grace and peace. Mary loved life and lived it fully. She found joy in movement and expression - practicing yoga, tai chi, and even belly dancing. She did it because it made her feel good, and that was all that mattered to her. Mary was never one to sit still. She loved to read and could often be found at the library-sometimes twice a week-searching for her next good book. She also loved to dance, especially to Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody." Whether it was at weddings, family gatherings, or just in the living room, she lit up the dance floor. Some said she could "cut a rug," and while her singing may not have won awards, it always brought smiles to those around her. Mary had a true passion for travel and explored many corners of the world, including unforgettable trips to Egypt and Japan. She traveled so often that She could of had an airline named in her honor - "Mary's Way" or "Flying the Friendly Skies." She truly made the skies feel friendly wherever she went. She also had a knack for shopping and could sniff out a bargain like no one else. Armed with coupons and enthusiasm, BJ's became her go-to spot. "Don't buy that margarine," she'd say. "I've got a $2 coupon for it!" At checkout, she'd often save at least $10 - and she was proud of it every time. At one point, Mary picked up the guitar. While she may not have been Jimi Hendrix, she strummed with heart. If you listened closely, you could recognize the tune. She gave her all in everything she did, and really - what more could you ask for? Mary was predeceased by her loving husband, George Butler, her beloved son, Bryant Butler, and her sister, Sylvia Wilmore. She is survived by her children Janice Greene (Clayton) and Kim Butler (Cheryl), as well as her daughter-in-law Jeanette. She also leaves behind her cherished siblings: Morris Wright, Vernell Wright, Gerald Wright, and Lois Keys. Her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, and she proudly answered to the name "Nanny," a title she wore with honor. Mary also had close bonds beyond her family. She shared many special moments over Turkish coffee with dear girlfriends, enjoyed a lifelong friendship with a work acquaintance, and formed a deep sister-like bond with a special neighbor across the street. She was an active member of her church family at St. Jane Frances and loved by countless friends, cousins, in-laws, aunts, uncles - truly, by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. As her children, my brother and I will miss her deeply. We'll miss the phone calls, the stories, the updates about the grandkids, the occasional gossip, and most of all - her voice telling us she loved us. It's hard now, but knowing she is no longer in pain brings us comfort. Rest in peace, Mom. And keep on dancing. A memorial mass will be held at 10am on Monday, October 6, 2025 at St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park, MD.

Mary was a bright spot here at Brightview/Crofton. We shared a love for See´s Candy from California and talked about our favorite sweet. I´m sorry that I didn´t connect with Mary after she broke her shoulder and moved to another facility. My heart is sad for me but I know she´s in good hands with God. Her spirit will live on for me. Blessings to her family.
