Obituary published on Legacy.com by Metcalf Mortuary - St. George on May 21, 2025.
St. George, Utah – Mary Ann Zabriskie (affectionately known as "Ann"), passed peacefully at home with family on May 17, 2025. She was 85. Her husband, Ronald Zabriskie "Ronnie" preceded her in death. She is survived by their son, Sean and his wife; her granddaughter, Lindsey; beloved niece, Michele; sister and brother: Patti and Pete; and several nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Ann was born in Vermont and grew up in Eagle Rock, CA. She and Ronnie's mothers, Violetta and Ione, were best friends and excellent matchmakers. From the time they were introduced, Ann and Ronnie had eyes only for each other. They wed in 1957 after she graduated from Eagle Rock High School. Ronnie was already enlisted in the Air Force. He served with honor in the South Pacific and was later recognized as an Atomic Veteran. After his tour of duty, Ronnie and Ann settled in Glendale, CA and built a wonderful life filled with family and friends.
Once they were settled, Sean came along and was the apple of their eye. Ann was a devoted and involved parent, volunteering her time as a room mother, Cub Scout den mother, and PTA officer. She was a fun and loving "second mom" to many of Sean's schoolmates. Ann would always laugh when she told the story of driving hours in LA traffic to buy huge cans of nacho cheese for the school concession stand. She also served as Treasurer for her neighborhood association in Glendale. Ann's neighbors also knew her as a servant leader and gracious hostess. Her annual Christmas Open House was joyfully enjoyed by friends and family alike.
During her long career as a Benefits Analyst, Ann helped countless employees plan for prosperous retirements. Ronnie was a plumber by trade and an instructor at LA Community College. They briefly moved to Vermont before she retired. Ronnie built her a beautiful home in Sun River but their time there was to be short. Radiation exposure from his military service caused the cancer that took him too soon. Before Ronnie left, he made sure she'd always be surrounded by caring friends and neighbors. Ann loved her time in Sun River and enjoyed travel, bingo, bunco, and dinners with friends old and new. Her tiny, little lap dogs brought her enormous joy.
Ann was a devout Catholic from a very young age. She'd often share fond memories of the Vermont nuns she knew and loved as a child. She became a parishioner at St George Catholic Church over twenty years ago. Her fellow Thrift Store volunteers looked forward to the delicious deviled eggs she brought every Monday. Ann also raised money for the Thrift Store by selling red and purple clothes and accessories to her lovely and well-dressed friends, the Red Hatters of Sun River.
Her other acts of kindness were quiet but impactful. Ann brought her mother and uncle to St George and was a devoted caretaker through their journey with dementia. Her constancy ensured their every single need, no matter how small, was met. She never complained or saw it as a sacrifice because it was her nature to help. Ann also generously supported charities for veterans, cancer patients, and children.
Anyone who met Ann will remember her boundless energy, cheerfulness, storytelling, and heart for helping others. Ann wanted her friends and family to know that she had a wonderful life. She knew she was well loved and will be sorely missed.
The Zabriskie and Gaboury families extend gratitude to the dedicated healthcare professionals and researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake and St George Regional Hospital Cancer Center. Ann's cancer, Sezary's, is very rare and most patients are given just six months to live. Because of the research and competent loving care from both hospitals, we got another decade with Ann, and she enjoyed an active, independent life. The family would also like to thank the St George Catholic Church's staff and parishioners, The Retreat at Sun River, and Enhabit Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Huntsman Cancer Institute, Giving - Huntsman Cancer Foundation, St George Cancer Center Donate to St. George Regional Hospital Evergreen or Memory Matters Utah Home Page - Memory Matters Utah.
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with a Rosary prior at 9:30 a.m., at the St. George Catholic Church located at 259 West 200 North. Interment will follow in Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Drive,
