1951 - 2024
Peabody - MaryEllen (O'Connell) Smith, 73, of Peabody, formerly of Lynn, passed away early Thursday morning, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a courageous battle with cancer.
MaryEllen was born in Brookline, MA, on May 6, 1951, daughter of the late Will D.F. O'Connell and Rita J. (Hopkins) O'Connell. She was in Dedham for a few years, before moving to Lynn, where she graduated from Lynn Classical High School. Prior to her retirement she had worked as a clerk for the railroad for over 25 years.
Throughout her life she cherished all the amazing friendships she made such as her lifelong friendships growing up in Lynn, working at the Porthole, and her YMCA water aerobics classes. She loved to travel to see her friends in Arizona, and spending time with the people she loved. She had a love for her cats and her granddog. She was a loving mother, and grandmother; always attending her grandchildren's sporting events and activities. She will be sorely missed by all who got the chance to know her.
She is survived by her son, Mark D. Smith and his wife Holly of Peabody; her grandchildren, Siobhan Smith and Declan Smith of Peabody; 3 brothers, Bernard F. O'Connell, James F. O'Connell, Joseph F. O'Connell; 1 sister Joanne M. Hosker and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, William F. O'Connell and Daniel T. O'Connell.
Service Information: Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 10 from 4-8PM at the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rt. 129) Lynn. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 11AM in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to c/o Mass General Hospital Cancer Center, Mass General Development Office, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114. MaryEllen was one of the very best friends of my childhood growing up in Curwin Circle, Lynn. We shared so may happy times together. She was one of those friends you could always count on. When you had MaryEllen for a friend, you knew you had a friend for life! RIP dear Mary. Love, Joanie

Maryellen was the Mother of all C&s forces of the Railroad. She fixed all there time cards and pointed everyone in the right direction. I know I couldn't do my job without her. Found memories is giving her the best gifts we could at Christmas to put a smile on her face. I am thinking of you big time Maryellen.

Mary Ellen was a cherished member of the family at the Torigian Family YMCA in Peabody. She will be missed by her many early morning friends in the pool and in her chair yoga classes. Rest in peace my friend. You were an inspiration to so many people. My sincere sympathy to her family.
