MarySue Dean Spurlin
January 12, 1947 – November 12, 2025
MarySue Dean Spurlin was born in Tallahassee, Florida, to Mary Ann Dean. She passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving husband and children.
MarySue grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. She studied to be a dental assistant at Pensacola Junior College, but her path led her to a long and successful career at Barnett Bank, where she worked her way up to Senior Vice President. She loved her work and the friends she made there, and she also found joy in giving back to her community, including serving as Treasurer of the Board of Community Hospice of NE Florida. It was beautiful to see how the organization that she served and loved was such an integral part of the last weeks of her life.
MarySue met her husband, Tom, in choir practice at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville. They fell in love over popcorn and Get Smart and were married on March 24, 1967. Together, they raised three children-Jeff, Dean, and Marianne-whom she loved fiercely. She took great pride in her children and welcomed her children's partners, Liz, Tiffany, and Dan, with open arms.
Her greatest joy, however, was being a grandmother to Elias, Sophie, Katelyn, Caroline, Brannon, Caleb, and Annaka. She loved being part of their everyday lives, cheering at birthdays, concerts, sporting events, school activities, and even spontaneous trips to Barnes & Noble or Chick-Fil-A. Her grandchildren adored her, and she will be deeply missed.
MarySue was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, where she served in the Middle School Ministry and mentored young moms through programs like Apples of God and Mom 2 Mom. She never met a stranger and was always ready with an encouraging word, a bit of wisdom, and a hug. She loved freely and fiercely, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life for MarySue will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 21, in the East Building Lobby of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Community Hospice of NE Florida or the Student Ministry of First Baptist Church.
