Mason Thomas Durham-Kientz, a vibrant soul whose laughter and love of life left an indelible mark on everyone he met, passed away on August 25, 2024, in Santa Ana, California. Born on April 7, 1989, in Newport Beach, California, Mason was a beacon of joy and creativity in the lives of all who knew him.
Mason's early years were spent growing up in the nurturing community of Irvine, where he attended Northwood High School. He had fond memories, especially those he shared with his parents. Mason's journey through life was also deeply enriched by the close bonds he formed with his cousins, Kara, April, Jesse and Chelsea who stood by him as unwavering pillars of support and friendship.
Throughout his life, Mason's artistic spirit led him to explore various vocations. His early days were spent as an outdoor education counselor, a role that allowed him to share his love for nature and to nurture young minds. Later, he joined forces with his step-father, Robert, as a picture and art framer, enjoying time they spent together crafting beautiful pieces for families they served. Mason's creativity was not confined to his work; he was a passionate artist, often expressing himself through the melodies he played on his guitar.
Music was one of Mason's greatest joys. With a guitar in hand and a song in his heart, he could often be found strumming chords and singing. His love for music was matched by his enthusiasm for movies. He was a true movie aficionado with a special fondness for horror movies.
His towering presence, standing at 6'3", might have been intimidating if not for the warmth of his personality and his infectious sense of humor. Mason could light up a room with his wit and charm.
Mason had a natural gift for making kids laugh and feel at ease, a testament to his loving and spirited nature. His social butterfly tendencies also revealed a man who was effortlessly charismatic, someone who could strike up a conversation and forge a connection with anyone he met.
Though Mason's journey was not without its challenges, as he bravely faced many struggles, his resilience and the support of those who loved him saw him through many difficult times. His life was a tapestry of moments filled with laughter, love, and the indomitable spirit that defined him.
Describing Mason can only be done of the qualities he embodied: funny, loving, and spirited. His legacy is one of joy and laughter, of music and art, and of the countless hearts he touched with his generous spirit.
Mason Thomas Durham-Kientz will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the unforgettable impact he made on our lives and the cherished memories he leaves behind. His laughter may have quieted, but the echoes of his vibrant spirit will resonate with us forever.

Mason was truly one of kind. An artist at heart, he was genuine, outgoing, funny, passionate, creative, loyal, kind, and a bit odd (in the best possible way). We experienced so much together since we became friends in the 4th grade, and I owe some of my fondest memories to him. Discovering our first taste of good music from Iistening to his mom´s record collection, learning how to play guitar together, re-enacting Blink-182 music videos (Dawn, please don´t show anyone those videos lol), going to our first shows...the list goes on. His friendship truly helped shape the person I am today. Mason had a heart of gold, and his presence will always be felt in the lives that he touched. Rest easy dear friend.

Mason and I had a strained relationship for a long time, always seemed that we were vying for the attention of the same girl.

Despite that, he was always kind and cared more about being friends, sometimes with my reluctance, he always made me feel at home, comfortable, better to have been in his presence, and never without a hug that made me feel small and welcome.

I thought of mason as the cool guy, never quick to anger, liked by all, quirky but genuinely so. I wanted to be like him, to exude the cool confidence that he so naturally displayed.

We finally, and actually became friends in a darker period of his life, but I was glad to have shared intimate details and a few solemn tears with him as we bonded over our shared duress.

His is a presence that will leave a lasting mark on all those he met, brief or not, an infectious smile, and a heart as warm and open as any friend could hope for.

I may not have shared in his more recent history, but he will have an everlasting mark on me.

Mason showed me so much great art and music I wouldn´t have ever discovered. He was always a fun person to be around. Sorry I still have your `American Hardcore´ DVD. Maybe one day we can watch it together again.

Mason was so quick to accept people into his life and treat them like his best friends. He invited me over to his house for a few sleep overs in high school not long after we first started hanging out. He made me feel welcomed and important. I discovered so many of my favorite bands from high school through Mason - Anatomy of a Ghost, This Day Forward, Taken. He had incredible music taste and never seemed self-conscious about belting out his favorite songs. He was so passionate and so free with his expression. He sang and danced and lived like no one was watching. I´ll miss him and my deepest sympathies go out to the family. He was a light that shined on all those close to him.
