Mathel Elkins Vanover

Mathel Vanover, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully at her home on November 7, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on December 3, 1933, her parents the late Ruben Dodge and Letha Mullins Elkins. Mathel was the loving wife to her late husband Buster W. Vanover, she was known for her unwavering dedication as a clerk at the Pike County Courthouse, where she served her community with grace and professionalism.

She also reunited with her two sisters Mary Gilpin, Franscovia Whitt, Paul Elkins, and her six brothers Lawrence Thomas Elkins, Jonah Garland Elkins, Anthony Matthew Elkins, George Sampson Elkins, and John Wesley Elkins who have passed on

In her lifetime, Mathel was a source of love and support for her family, and she is survived by her children, including her daughter Retha (Jeff) Newsome, and her sons Christopher Todd (Erma Slone) Vanover and Barry Alan (Crystal) Vanover. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Alan (Erin) Vanover, Amanda (Jason) Shannon, Amy (Gary) Collins, Luca Alan Vanover, and Mila Maria Vanover, as well as her eight great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy.

Family and friends will gather to honor Mathel’s life and memory on November 9, 2025, at Faith Baptist Church of Myra in Dorton, Kentucky. The visitation will take place from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at Faith Baptist Church of Myra, Dorton, Kentucky on November 10, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Mathel will then be laid to rest at Annie E. Young Cemetery in Pikeville, Kentucky.

Mathel Vanover will be remembered for her kindness, her serene presence, and the profound impact she had on those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will continue to resonate within the hearts of her family and community.
