Matija Lunka Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Money and King Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Mar. 19, 2026.
Matija Lunka, a man whose vibrant spirit and beautiful bass voice could fill any room, passed away peacefully in Vienna, Virginia on March 13, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on January 13, 1948, in the village of Žerovnica, Slovenia, Matija was the eldest of four siblings – son of Ana and Matija Lunka. He grew up in the breathtaking foothills of the Julian Alps, working on the family farm that has been in the Lunka name for centuries. Matija cherished these roots, often recounting stories of the "fruits of their labor," – a life where the food on the table and bonds with neighbors were grown from collective hard work. He was a gifted dancer – especially when paired with his wife, Janina, during a Polka. He sang bass for his village harmonizing group and his family would often catch him singing beloved traditional Slovenian hymns. His early years were also marked by service in the Yugoslavian army, an experience that allowed him to explore the diverse cultures of the Balkans. After pursuing higher education in the city of Cernkica, and beginning a career with a local furniture manufacturer, Matija's path took an unexpected turn when he was relocated to New Jersey. What was meant to be a temporary stay became a lifelong journey the night he walked into a local dance hall in Wallington. Despite a language barrier, he asked Janina Lozowska to dance; that single moment defined the rest of his life. Matija would light up any room he walked into and he loved connecting with people on the human level. Far away from his motherland, his outgoing personality made him an instant favorite with Janina's family, who embraced him as their own. He shared a particularly deep bond with his mother-in-law, Jadwiga Lozowska, whom he loved with the same devotion he held for his own mother, Ana Lunka. Matt and Janina had two children, Melissa and Bobby, and the Lunkas eventually settled in Midlothian, Virginia, where his love for connecting with people led him to a successful career in sales. He didn't just sell; he listened, finding genuine joy in the stories of every person he met. Matija's passions were as big as his personality. Whether he was woodworking, singing traditional hymns, or hosting parties on his pontoon boat, he was often the "life of the party" and usually the last to leave. Most of all, he loved his family and friends. Despite the distance, Matija kept close ties with his family overseas. To his 3 granddaughters, he was their beloved "Dziadziu," always showing them undeniable joy and love, with a primary mission to make them laugh. To his children, he was a pillar of support and a constant source of love. Matija is survived by his wife Janina Lunka, daughter Melissa Lunka DuRoss (William); his son Bobby Lunka (Juliet); and his 3 cherished granddaughters, Alexandra and Olivia DuRoss, and Eliza Lunka. He also leaves behind his siblings Silva Palcic, Hermina Smrecnik, and Frenk Lunka, along with a wide circle of friends and family who were lucky enough to be caught in his light. While we will deeply miss the resonance of his voice here on earth, we take comfort in knowing he has found his place in the choir of angels, likely leading the harmony. In keeping with the Lenten season, flowers are not permitted at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates your prayers, love, and support, and invites you to honor his memory by spending time with loved ones or performing an act of kindness in his name.
