Matt Henderson Obituary

COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - James Manson Henderson Jr., affectionately known as "Matt," passed away on Thursday July 31, 2025, at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 89. Born on March 10, 1936, in Cookeville, Tennessee, Matt was a devoted family man, a distinguished veteran, and a dedicated preacher of the gospel.

Matt retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel following a 20 year career in the US Army. This included three tours in Vietnam, earning the respect and appreciation of his peers and those who served under him. Next he served as a veteran's service officer, utilizing his experience to assist fellow veterans in Cookeville and Nashville, ensuring they received the care and support they deserved.

Matt earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1959 from Tennessee Tech University. His education paved the way for a successful career, but it was his service to the community that showcased his true dedication to helping others. Matt was also a member of the Breakfast Rotary Club in Cookeville, contributing to local efforts and building connections within the community.

Toward the end of his Army career, Matt obeyed the Gospel and soon dedicated his efforts to preaching the Gospel. He served as a minister at Cullom Church of Christ for almost 30 years, where he touched the lives of countless individuals through his ministry, guidance, and unwavering support.

He is survived by his daughters, Pam Walker (Stephen) and Sara Smith (Edward); and his cherished grandchildren, Curt Walker (Jennifer), Joel Walker (Meredith), Philip Manson Smith (Cassandra), Abigail Venuso (Joseph), Hannah Brinker (Riley), and Paige Smith.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, James Manson Henderson Sr. and Edith Henry Henderson; his beloved wife, Sylvia Gail Henderson; and his siblings, Leroy Henderson and Helen Keeney.

A funeral service to honor Matt will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday August 7 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Steve Walker and Ed Smith will officiate.
