We are sad to announce the passing of Matterson Vernon Perryman of Mobile, Alabama, on Saturday morning, August 9, 2025.
He was known affectionately as "Granddaddy." His unwavering kindness and willingness to help everyone was just one of his many great personality traits. He was born in Munich, Germany, and as a child resided in Mobile, Alabama. After attending Murphy High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. After his military service, he went on to pursue a successful professional career at Mobile Area Water and Sewer System. Matt's strong work ethic continued to be evident in his work career when he successfully received his bachelor's degree in business from the University of South Alabama. He met his loving spouse and soulmate, Martha Jo Perryman, at Mae Eanes Middle School. They had three loving children: Melinda Jo, Greg, and Megan.
Some of his favorite hobbies included coaching competitive baseball and softball, watching the Atlanta Braves and Alabama football while always cheering "Roll Tide," spending weekends at the casino, participating in Mardi Gras Organizations as a member and Marshall, and hosting family cookouts during holiday weekends. Matt retired after 38 years at Mobile Area Water and Sewer System.
He lived at his house enjoying time with family and friends. Matt's grandchildren are forever grateful for his love, kindness, and willingness to share his experiences on the ways of the world. His humor, laughter, announcer voice, and world-famous pipe are things about him that will never be forgotten. He will surely be missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jo Perryman; his parents: Emory and Irmentraut Perryman; brothers: Rudy Perryman, Lesley Perryman, Charles Perryman, and sister, Cathy Weekley.
His memory and love are reflected and remembered by his children: Melinda (Mark) Brown, Greg (Tonya) Perryman, and Megan (John) Gray. Matt is also survived by his grandchildren: Amber Tran, Madison Perryman, Mason Perryman, Hunter Brown, Katey Jo Brown, Lexy Brown, Brody Brown, McKinley Gray, Lindy Brown, and Corbin Gray; and great grandchildren: Elijah and Lennox Tran. His siblings: Edward Perryman and Susan Roberts.
Matt will never be forgotten, nor will the love he instilled in those he left behind.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Rd, Mobile, Alabama. Immediately following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
