Matthew was born on January 10, 1940, the beloved son of the late Imogene Clark (Matheus) in
Columbia, South Carolina. He departed this earthly life on Saturday, November 1, 2025, in
Columbia, South Carolina.
Matthew spent his early years in
Columbia, SC and began a journey that would take him across the world and touch the lives of countless individuals. "Munchie" as he was affectionately called by family and friends, attended public schools in
Columbia, South Carolina, before moving to Charlotte, and attended West Charlotte High School, where he completed his education in 1957. A lifelong learner, Matthew, went on to study architecture at Northampton School of Technology in Northampton, England, and continued his academic journey at the University of Arizona, Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, and Los Angeles City College, where he earned an associate's degree in maintenance engineering.
Matthew proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. His distinguished military career took him to several key Air Force bases, including KI Sawyer Air Force Base, Kunsan Air Force Base in Korea, Davis-Manthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ, Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base in Oklahoma, and Korat Air Force Base in Thailand. He also served at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, where his dedication to service was felt by all who worked alongside him.
While serving in the Air Force, Matthew continued to serve his community with the same level of dedication and commitment. He became the first African American to serve as President of the Kiwanis Lions Club, a testament to his leadership and determination. He also held positions as Vice President of the Society of Brothers and was a member of the National Education Association.
After retiring from the Air Force, Matthew returned to his roots in
Columbia, South Carolina, where he worked as the Building Supervisor at Columbia High School. His years of service to the community left a lasting impact, and he was beloved by students, faculty, and the wider community. He loved to fish, sold fried turkeys during the holidays, and genuinely embraced his retirement.
Matthew's legacy is not only defined by his career and leadership but also by the love and kindness he extended to all who crossed his path.
He leaves behind a son, Matthew Marjonen; his beloved brother, Mabry "Merv" Matheus, two loving sisters, Mariel and Marilyn Matheus, nieces, Marielle and Madison (Usamah); and nephew, Jimel (Makayla); two great nephews, Trevon Martin and Ayden; a great niece, Andrea; his special friend, Lolita Shuler, and countless friends and relatives who will miss him dearly.
Matthew Clark was a humble man of strength, integrity, and vision. He will always be remembered for his contributions to his community, devotion to family, his hearty chuckle, and his signature smile!
