Matthew J. Genova, known as Matt, passed away on Saturday, July 22 at Hillcrest Senior
Living from natural causes. As per Matt's wishes he is to be cremated and no services to be
held.
Matthew J. Genova was 75 at his passing. He was born on November 23 1947 in Brooklyn,
New York to parents Ralph Roy and Kathryn Genova. He had an inseparable close bond with
his twin brother Michael while growing up. His brothers Mark and Tommy accompanied the
active twins in their adventures in Brooklyn and while visiting grandparents in Southampton.
Around age 11 his family permanently relocated to Southampton where Matt developed a love
for clamming, boating, and fishing. His younger brother James joined the family. In
Southampton, he met his wife Karen with whom he had two daughters before going their
separate ways.
Matt was predeceased by his twin brother Michael, brothers Mark and Thomas, father Ralph
Roy, and mother Kathryn. He is survived by his daughter Megan Emerson, son in law Branch
Emerson and grandchildren Caleigh, Aidan & Finn Emerson of New York. Additional surviving
family include his younger brother James Genova of Georgia, sister-in-law Kathryn Daly
Genova, nephew David Genova, nephew Nathan Nichols, niece Tara Nichols. Estranged
surviving family include nephews Marc Genova, Rafaelle Genova, Keven Genova, and Sean
Genova. His estranged daughter Kimberly Mather grandchildren Christian, Bryce and
Savannah Mather of Connecticut.
Matt loved his family, friends and community. He was willing to help when asked and never
said no. Matt had a special place in his hear for his energetic German Shepherd, Quinn. Matt was
a former Southampton Town Police Officer and active Oklee City Council-member. He did his
best to improve the community while helping his neighbors. He moved from New York to
Georgia and then later to Oklee. During that time Matt held many jobs in security and
administration while completing his college education and caring for his close friend, Harriet.
Matt enjoyed reading but was a passionate gardener. His connection to the earth inspired him
to always plant more than he needed. He enjoyed giving the extra to anyone who asked. In
the summer, when not in the garden, you could find on the local lakes trying to catch that big
Walleye or Northern Pike. He made a few trips with friends to Lake of the Woods where he
caught his largest Walleye at 26 inches. In the winter you could find him in the deer stand
waiting for the elusive big buck. He harvested some nice deer over the years. Matt was a
strong minded New York transplant who made Minnesota his home. A man who lived life with
strong convictions and faith. Matt will truly be missed by family and friends.
