Matthew pursued an exceptional academic career, earning both dental and medical degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University and New York Medical College, respectively. He graduated with honors and served as a chief resident during his residency. Combining his expertise in dental and medical care, he practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery for nearly 30 years. He had a passion for facial reconstruction, particularly for trauma victims, and dedicated his time to numerous charitable missions throughout South America.
Beyond his professional achievements, Matthew was an adventurer at heart. He held a pilot's license and enjoyed aerial photography, skydiving, boating and reading. He will be fondly remembered for his calming demeanor, empathetic nature, brilliant mind, and witty sense of humor.
Matthew was predeceased by his father, Dr. A. Matthew Hilmi, and his mother, Agnes Hilmi. He is survived by his siblings, David Hilmi (Beth), Dr. Francesca Hilmi, Celeste Hilmi (Michael), and Dr. John Hilmi (Ann Marie); his beloved partner, Dr. Christine Sachakov; as well as his cherished nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare professionals at Memorial Sloan Kettering for their exceptional care and support.
Visitation will be held 4 to 7 PM on Friday February 7, 2025 at George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. His funeral service will take place 10 AM on Saturday February 8 at the funeral home. (www.GJMoylanFuneralHome.com) Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Rosendale. I was so very saddened to learn of Dr Hilmi's passing. He was so kind, he had a great sense of humor, and he had a unique ability to help people feel at ease. I met him 2 years ago after my 26 year old son died suddenly. He took time to sit with me and talk to me about my son each time I saw him. He offered suggestions about self care and grief groups, and he was one of the only people who did not tell me everything would be OK. He encouraged me to understand that it would always be painful, but that my ability to live with the pain would evolve. I appreciated his heartfelt words of support and took his advice. It goes without saying that he was a specialist in his field - he fixed a problem for several of my teeth that other's could not. My heart goes out to his family and all who loved him, and were lucky enough to cross paths with him. My family and I will think of him often.

I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Hilmi. I was a patient last August. He pulled a tooth that had broken. He made such an impression on my husband and I. Very kind. I remember being sad about losing the tooth and he told me there are worse things to go through. Just the way he said it made me stop feeling bad for myself. I only saw him 3 times, but there was just something special about him. I am truly sorry to hear of his passing, but he is with the Lord Jesus Christ now. Roger and Kathy Guarini

Our condolences to the Hilmi family. Matt was a great guy. He´d come by my pizza shop and we´d chat while he was waiting for his food. He will be missed!
