Matthew Jon Larson, born on June 17, 1980, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, departed this world unexpectedly near his home in Rothsay on September 29, 2024 at the age of 44.
Matthew's life was a vibrant tapestry woven through his passion for service, kinship, and laughter. As a devoted volunteer fireman and first responder for eight years with the Rothsay Fire Department, he epitomized the spirit of compassion for his community, embodying a quintessential love for helping others. His presence was synonymous with courage and kindness, illuminating the lives of those he served. Matthew's most recent employment as a heavy equipment operator for Geyer and KPH earned him the affectionate nickname "Matty Ice," a testament to both his tenacity and his engaging spirit. He consistently pushed the boundaries—of himself and of the machines he operated—with an unyielding determination that inspired his colleagues and friends alike.
Matthew's educational journey began at Pelican Rapids School, where his infectious enthusiasm enlivened the hallways and athletic fields, particularly during spirited games of football, basketball, and track. He further pursued his education at Northland Community and Technical College, where he studied criminal justice. His love for cooking flourished in his youth and remained a cherished part of his adult life, showcasing his multifaceted talents.
Matthew's personality was a radiant beacon filled with sensitivity and humor. He loved people deeply, whether through heartfelt conversations on the phone or warm visits with family and friends. His playful sayings and lighthearted teasing brightened every room he entered, and his absence will leave an indelible void in the hearts of many. A beloved son, brother, father, and friend, Matthew's devotion to his children—Jack and Kenadie Larson, alongside stepdaughter Robyn Schmidt—was unwavering; he cherished each moment spent with them.
Left to mourn the loss of their beloved Matthew are his significant other, Kayla Lehto; his cherished children, Jack and Kenadie Larson; his stepdaughter, Robyn Schmidt; his devoted parents, Jerry and Stephanie Larson; his brothers, Jeff (Lara) Larson and Tommy Larson; his sister, Missi Larson; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, including Jim (Marsha) Lyon, Debi (David) Paul, Karen Radloff, Jerry Chastain, Jeff (Nancy) Larson, Hunter Ohnstad, Annie Redetzke, Jayda Larson, Zoey Larson, Zane Larson, Jeremy Chastain, Jared Chastain, Ryan Paul, Michael Paul, Stephanie Gustafson , Michelle Lyon, Laura Weldon
Matthew now joins the ranks of those beloved individuals who have preceded him—Bill and Maxine Lyon, Kenneth and Grace Larson, Jane Chastain, Wayne Radlof, and Lisa Lyon—whose spirits undoubtedly welcome him in eternal peace.
With a memorial service planned for October 8, 2024, at Rothsay Event Center, family and friends are invited to gather to share stories, honor his legacy of love and laughter, and celebrate the many ways Matthew Jon Larson poured joy into their lives. It is here that those who knew him will ensure that his light continues to shine, a testimony to a life remarkably lived and profoundly missed.
