With great sadness, we announce the passing of Matthew Miller, "Mateo del Mar." After a courageous battle with depression, he left us as he lived-on his own terms.
Matthew is survived by his father Gary, mother Christine, stepdad Al, sisters Addie and Lyra, and cousin Sara, along with a wide circle of friends and family who loved him dearly.
Growing up on San Juan Island, Matthew attended Friday Harbor Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, excelling as a fearless football player and wrestler. He later graduated from the California Maritime Academy, where rugby was his passion. As a merchant marine, he circumnavigated the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, embracing a life of adventure and discovery.
Matthew had an extraordinary charisma, lighting up every room with his humor and warmth. He had a unique ability to draw people into his spontaneous adventures, whether it was a sunrise fishing trip or last minute road trip. He would often arrive out of the blue with fresh fish in tow, ready to cook an elaborate meal. Spending time with Matthew was always synonymous with enjoying great food. His zest for life and dynamic spirit will be deeply missed.
Matthew also had a thoughtful, contemplative side, where he immersed himself in reading, painting, and writing. For the past seven years, he called Colombia home. There, he demonstrated his compassion by organizing a food drive during Covid that provided thousands of pounds of food to families in Medellin, touching many lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us through these challenging weeks. Your love and kindness have been a great comfort.
As we navigate this profound loss, we ask for privacy while we gather our strength to move forward without our dear Mateo del Mar.
