He was a graduate of Herbert Hoover High School, Class of 2003, and a graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on WVU football, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Boston Red Sox. Matt had a special place in his heart for nature and animals. He found peace in fishing, camping, and spending time with friends and family.
Matt was a beloved partner, son, and friend. His presence will be missed by many.
He is survived by his partner, Jessica Barnhouse, mother Cathy Montali, father David Montali, sister Maggie Knowlton (Curt), and nieces Regan, McKenna, and Riley.
There will be a private family service in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association: Online at https://adoptcharleston.com/support or mail a check made payable to KCHA to 1248 Greenbrier Street, Charleston, WV 25311. Please include the name of the person being honored, and if you'd like KCHA to notify anyone, please include that information as well.
