Matthew Stephen Sward, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025, after a long battle with dementia.
Steve, as he was known, was born in Newark, NJ on December 21, 1941. He was the son of the late Herm and Rose (Klayman) Sward.
His family moved to West Orange, NJ in 1952, and Steve graduated from West Orange High School in 1960. He also attended and received his college degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Steve resided in Florham Park, NJ for 25 years and moved to Florida in 1992. He worked in the food and restaurant industry for decades in NJ, Florida, and Pennsylvania and always had a smile and warm greeting for his customers.
A dog lover, Steve had many pets over the years. He was also a lifelong fan of the New York Giants, Knicks, and Yankees, a passion that he passed along to his three sons.
Steve is survived by his son, Greg, and his wife, Amanda, of San Francisco, CA, his son, Glenn, and his wife, Courtney, of Downingtown, PA, and his son, Doug, and his wife, Lori, of Florham Park, NJ. He was always very proud of his 7 grandchildren - Megan, Kira, Olivia, Dylan, Hailey, Peyton, and Camryn. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Chesler, her husband, Alan, and his three nephews.
Steve's wishes were to be cremated and he did not want any funeral services. The family will get together later this summer for a celebration of life.
