Celebrating the Life, Labor, and Legacy of Mattie Pearl Hicks Chalk
09-25-1935 – 09-23-2025

Mattie Pearl (Hicks) Chalk was born to the parentage of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy and Estella (Webb) Hicks on September 25, 1935. The baby of eight children, she was born in Wellington, Texas, and raised in the city of Garland, Texas. She described her childhood as being especially memorable because of her tight-knit family. She was especially proud of her relationship with her father: "Everybody respected my dad, even the police officers."

Mattie was saved at an early age at Greater Davis Chapel C.O.G.I.C. At the age of 18, after finishing high school, she married, and from this union, her first child was born. At the age of 20, she left the church, and as she said, "I was looking for a storybook marriage; the problem with that was I was doing the looking." Two children later, she attended nursing school and worked in a hospital as a surgical technician. Mattie had fond memories of her job and described her experience working with surgeons: "Whenever the doctor needed a tool, he would say it, and I would grab the tool and had to put it in his hand firmly!"

Her career also included obtaining a barber license and driving for DART Transit for 10 years. Some of her greatest friendships evolved from her driving for DART. After years of trying to do things her way, she said, "I found out that I couldn't do it on my own. I gave it up and turned it over to the Lord for Him to work it out-and He did."

She then met a fine young man by the name of Tommy L. Chalk, Sr., and two years later, they married. To this union, one son was born. Later, she said, "The Lord found me and saved me and filled me with the Holy Ghost". She served as secretary, choir president, Sunday School teacher, and Bible Band teacher. She also served as first lady and district missionary. Mattie was a true friend, confidant, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and example for young women everywhere. Her trust was in God.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Estella (Webb) Hicks; father, Leroy Hicks; husband, Tommy L. Chalk, Sr.; sisters, Zella Mae Hicks, Lottie Dawkins, Mozella Baker, and Georgia Artis Fields; brothers, Clarence L. Hicks, Leroy Hicks, Jr., and Joe Roy Hicks; and daughter, Deloris A. Brown.

Those left to cherish precious memories and continue her legacy of love include her children, Missionary Sheryel Hill, Missionary Debbie Crooms, Elder Tommy L. Chalk, Jr., Lanna Chalk, Gary Daniels, Bobby Chalk, Darren Chalk, and Debbie Chalk; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
