Mattie Lou Doan, age 70, peacefully entered into eternal rest in the gardens of heaven on June 9, 2024, in
Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the Dougherty Hospice House surrounded by all her family. She was born in
Mobridge, South Dakota, on October 29, 1953, to Lois and Alfred "Swede" Marshall and joined two older brothers at home. Mattie Lou embraced the values of hard work and devotion to the family from an early age, growing up on her family's ranch near
Timber Lake, South Dakota. Following Mattie Lou's birth, there were five more siblings that joined the family, and she always tried to keep them in line. The younger ones gave her the nickname Eagle because she would always let Mom know what they were up to. Until the day she passed, she kept track of all her siblings and made sure they were doing right.
Mattie Lou attended White Horse School and Glencross School. Later she graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1971 and went on to work in many different roles. She worked at Dewey County Bank for many years, at the Isabel Super Value, was a flagger and a pilot car driver for a few summers, babysat many kids while raising her own two children, cleaned house for a few elderly folks, was the bookkeeper for Isabel Co-op and until the day she passed was the officer manager for CRST DOT. She loved keeping busy and would always wonder what she would do if she ever did "retire". She would say she would be too bored.
Mattie Lou and Dave met at a bank Christmas Party and the rest is history. They were united in marriage on May 15th, 1982. They just celebrated their 42nd anniversary last month. To this union, Mattie Lou's pride and joys were born. First was her little boy Clint Jay born on February 7th, 1985, and then her baby girl Shanna Kay on November 19th, 1987. She would do anything for her children and always made sure that they were taken care of. She attended any function that either one had going on. Later on, when both were grown, she would attend many of her nieces, nephews, and adoptive nieces and nephews' functions. Whenever she had a chance, she would make sure that she was able to attend different activities for her two grandsons as they were also her pride and joy. The day that she became a grandma was such a proud day for her. She loved her two boys very much and missed them even more. She would make them pancakes every morning that they were together, and they both said that they missed Grandma and her pancakes the most. She also played games with them and would get them something special anywhere she went.
Mattie Lou had such a passion for her flower gardens. She could be found outside playing in her gardens. Always making up new gardens, transplanting things in different spots, moving things around, pulling up those dang weeds, and just enjoying being outside in the dirt. Most of her flowers have a story of where she got that seedling or whom she got a clipping from to start it in her garden. She made her patio a welcoming place for anyone and everyone to come sit and have a cup of coffee. She would never turn down a good cup of coffee and good conversation. If it wasn't a good cup of coffee it was sitting around the table playing a game of Tenzi. She would never let you just win, even the grandsons had to fight to beat grandma. Mattie Lou loved the simple pleasures in life and would never pass up the opportunity for an adventure with her best friend or sister. They were always finding good bargains at garage sales, yard sales, estate sales, thrift stores, you name it! Mattie Lou also had passion for reading and could finish a whole book drinking just her morning coffee. She was crafty and could make just about anything by looking at a picture then just by sewing or hot glueing it together!
Mattie Lou was the esteemed President of the Smith Wright Unit 120 American Legion Auxiliary. She took much pride in this role and made sure things were done perfectly and correctly. You could always find Mattie Lou cooking up a storm to help support any local event. She would volunteer her time and be there if you needed her.
Mattie Lou was confirmed on December 14th, 1973, at the First Baptist Church, in Timber Lake, SD. She was a committed member of the church and later became a member of the United Church of Christ, in Isabel. She spent lots of time "up" at the church working on things. She loved her little church and its members very dearly.
