Maureen Heafey Obituary

Maureen L. Heafey

Greenfield, MA - Maureen L. Heafey passed away at the Baystate Medical Center on November 27th after a sudden and brief illness. Her family was at her bedside during her peaceful passing.

Born on the family farm on River Road in Whately MA on March 7, 1944, she was the daughter of William P. Heafey and Doris E (Brais) Heafey. After the family moved to Northampton MA, Mo, as she was affectionately known, attended local schools, and graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1961. Seeking a career in nursing, Maureen then graduated from the St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford CT. She began her career at Mass General Hospital in Boston while also pursuing a B.S. in Nursing from Boston College followed by a M.S. in Nursing from Boston University. With credentials in hand Mo accepted a position as a nursing instructor at the Mass General School of Nursing followed by a psychiatric nursing instructor position at the McLean Hospital of the Harvard Medical School. Mo's last employment was as a counselor at the Spaulding Rehab Hospital, Boston MA.

The greatest joy of Mo's life was meeting the love of her life and partner of 31 years, Beverly Matthews. Together they finished their careers in Boston and chose to retire in Greenfield MA. Transitioning from their urban lifestyle they were delighted to discover the leisure, recreational and social opportunities of the area. Mo and Bev enjoyed golf, bowling, dancing, photography, annual trips to FL, niece and nephew events and mostly just being in the company of each other.

The essence of Mo's life was as it was in her career, to be a joyful person, non-judgmental, a healing hand and an advocate for those less fortunate. She never stopped seeking to bring joy and happiness to those around her as she gathered with her many friends and family. Being a part of Mo's life was a gift and a privilege.

Maureen is survived by her partner Beverly Matthews as well as two younger brothers. Brian Heafey of Northampton, his wife Ginger (Barr) Heafey, Kevin Heafey also of Northampton, and his wife Barbara (Buividas) Heafey. Niece Danyelle (Heafey) LaRosa, her husband Adam LaRosa and their Children Luca, Lola and Lily. Nephew Matt Heafey, his wife Kate and their children, Madisen, Olivia and Ella. Nephew Nick Heafey and niece Brianna Heafey.

A celebration of Maureen's life will be held at the Terazza Restaurant at the Greenfield Country Club at noon on December 9th . A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers charitable donations in Maureen's memory may be made to the Riverside Industries (Empowering People with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities) of Easthampton MA. All services are under the care of the Chesire Family Funeral Home of Keene NH.

Brian,
Scanning The Gazette I came across your sister MO´s obituary this evening. She certainly had quite the nursing career and lived life to its fullest.
Those Florence/Northampton days, when we lived in the shadow my sister Evie and your sister Mo, Annunciation Grammar School through St Mikes....great memories.
My condolences to you and your family.
