Maurice "Mel" Chalk passed away on April 4, 2025 surrounded by family at the age of 82. He was born in Alpena, Michigan on November 1, 1942 to Maurice Sr. and Catherine Chalk. He is survived by his wife Angela Avati Chalk. They were married on November 9, 1963 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mel graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1960 and received a Master's Degree in Finance from Rutgers University in 1978. Before starting his 35 year career in the banking industry, he owned and operated The Snack Shack on Albany Post Road. After selling his business, he began work as a teller at The County Trust Company, a community bank, and retired as Regional Vice President with the Bank of New York.
Mel was civic minded and belonged to many local, county and state organizations. He was a former member of The Peekskill Community Ambulance Corp., a former Co-Chairman of The St. Patrick's Church Parish Council and Finance Committee Chairman, a former Treasurer of the Verplanck Fire District and a member of the Verplanck Seniors. He was appointed to the Westchester County Youth Board, a Salvation Army Advisory Board member and a Board member and Vice President of the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing, to name some of his volunteer activities.
He enjoyed participating and watching sporting events, especially The Yankees and boxing. He loved and was very proud of all the accomplishments his grandchildren have made.
He is survived by his children, Ann Marie Bajjaly (NC), Patrick Chalk (NC) and Michael Chalk (Verplanck, NY), his brother John Dennis Chalk (CT), sister-in-law Marie Ray (NC), grandchildren Briana Bajjaly, Ryan Bajjaly, Michael Chalk, Nicholas Chalk, Justin Chalk and nieces and nephews Melissa, Emily, Allison and Brian.
He was predeceased by his mother and father Maurice Chalk Sr., Catherine Chalk, step-mother Katherine Chalk, brothers-in-law Raymond Ray, John Avati, and sister-in-law Jerri Chalk.
Reposing is Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 4-8 pm at the O'Mara and Carpentieri Funeral Home. A mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Thursday, April 10, 2025 at St. Patrick's Church in Verplanck.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Verplanck Fire Department, 238 8th Street, Verplanck, NY 10596 or The Salvation Army, give.salvationarmy.org.
