Maurice Wightman Obituary

Maurice C. Wightman
June 21, 2024
Maurice C. Wightman, 79, of Onondaga Hill, passed away Friday, at Upstate University Hospital. Born in Binghamton, Maurie spent the majority of his life in the Syracuse area, where he left an indelible mark on the community. A proud graduate of Harpursville Central High School, Maurie pursued his passion for funeral services by attending Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science, from which he graduated in 1963. His educational journey continued at Syracuse University, where he earned his MBA, a testament to his dedication and ambition.
Maurie honorably served his country as a U.S. Marine veteran during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his bravery and commitment to service. After his military service, he worked for Hanford Co. and Bristol Labs before ultimately becoming President of Simmons Institute of Funeral Service in Syracuse, a role in which he made significant contributions to the field.
A communicant of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, Maurie's faith was an integral part of his life. He was actively involved in several professional organizations, including the New York State Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Central New York Funeral Directors Association.
Maurie was also a valued member of both the Valley Men's Club and American Legion Post #1468 and was an avid S.U. sports fan.
Above all, Maurie cherished his family. His love and dedication to them were unwavering, and he found great joy in spending time with his loved ones.
Maurie was predeceased by his son, Mark B. Wightman and parents, Maurice and Jeanne Wightman.
Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Vera; daughter, Mary-Elizabeth Wightman of Lake Placid; brother, Melvern (Sandra) of Chenango Forks; sisters, Nancy (Jim) Riley of Dunnellon, FL and Shirley Dahl of San Rafael, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
To celebrate Maurie's life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, 4845 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY 13205.
Contributions may be made to the Valley Men's Club or to the Valley American Legion Post #1468, 110 Academy St, Syracuse, NY 13207 or to Honor Flight Syracuse, P.O. Box 591, Syracuse, NY 13209.
Maurie's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
