1938-2023

Salt Lake City, UT-Max Irven Carrigan, 85, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on December 26, 2023.

Beloved husband, dad, favorite papa, dedicated co-worker and dear friend, Max was born on February 28, 1938 to James W. Carrigan and Mildred H. King, in Ogden, Utah. He spent his early childhood down on notorious 25th Street selling copies of the Standard Examiner to bar patrons, knowing he could retrieve the papers later in the evening and sell them again, thereby doubling his profits.

He graduated from Ogden High School and continued his education at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Engineering/Economics. While living in Boulder, Colorado he attended the University of Colorado, taking courses in mechanical engineering.

Max developed his lifelong love of golf at El Monte Golf Course where he worked during high school as a caddie, caddie master and starter and later in life enjoyed golfing with his longtime friends and brother Jim throughout Ogden and St. George, Utah.

He married Sherrie Torman in 1962 and together they welcomed 3 children into their family before moving to Boulder, Colorado, and later Seattle, Washington to work for IBM. At IBM he received the annual Hundred Percent Club award for outstanding performance and dedication 6 years in a row. While living in Seattle, Max and Sherrie met Greg and Vicki Francis, lifelong friends, who they still remain in touch with all these years later.

With his early entrepreneurial skills and sense of creativity, Max co-invented the Charley-Bolt and Bag Boy. In 1988, Max founded Computer Power Technology, a successful power quality equipment company and in 1992, wishing to expand into data center design/build, he founded Computer Sites, Inc., Utah. He eventually became partners with his twin sons, Max, and Bill in Intellivex until his retirement in 2010.

We have many fond memories of our Dad; he was the skilled Captain of our Cruise-A-Home boat "ET Brokus II", at one of his favorite places, Lake Powell and enjoyed many memorable Powell trips with the Swaseys, Willams and the Hawkins families. He enjoyed many ski weekends with the family at Park City Mountain Resort, bike riding vacations at Sunriver and trips to Chicago.

He was the only person we know who could wiggle his ears and hold the "human flag" pose on the corner street pole. Max had the honor of carrying the Olympic torch through the streets of downtown Salt Lake City as crowds of spectators and his family cheered him on during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Never far from his yellow legal pad and Uniball pen, Max was continually jotting down thoughts and ideas for his next big adventure. He was our family's rock; remaining positive in the face of adversity and always dedicated to maintaining the family unit, he was the peacemaker and voice of reason when things got tough.

Survived by his loving wife and life-long partner of 61 years, Sherrie, children Cydney Hogan (Joe), Inlet Beach, Florida, Max (Kris) Carrigan, Salt Lake City, Utah, Bill (Patricia) Carrigan, Salt Lake City, Utah, brother Jim, (Gloria) Carrigan, Seattle, Washington, grandchildren Max, Molly, Erin and Hayden and great grandchild Birdie May.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Danielle and Lola, with the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Center Hospice for their kindness and support. Per Max's request, a memorial service will be held in the Spring, when it is warm enough for his friends and family to gather.
