Max Wilkey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Freeman Mortuary - Jefferson City on Jan. 30, 2026.
Max Duane Wilkey, age 78, of Columbia, Mo., passed away, Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the University Hospital in Columbia.

He was born on July 26, 1947, in Battle Creek, Michigan, the son of Roy Cleo and Ollie Mattie "Ward" Wilkey.

After graduating from Battle Creek High School, Max joined the United States Navy where he honorably served for many years.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Max became a long-haul trucker and drove all over the United States.

Max found joy in life's simple, meaningful moments. He had a deep love for old Western movies, especially those starring John Wayne, and never tired of a good classic film. An outdoorsman at heart, Max especially cherished hiking and spending time in nature throughout Michigan. He was a dedicated member of the Resident Advisory Board for the Paquin Towers Housing Authority in Columbia, where he worked to support his community. Max also generously gave his time volunteering with Columbia Parks and Recreation, helping to support the Adapted Community Recreation Program. Above all, Max was kind, compassionate, and humble, touching the lives of others through his quiet strength and genuine care for those around him.

He is survived by his son Duane Wilkey; granddaughter, Harley Sharp; good friends and caregiver, Sarah Bowman (Brad), and Taylor Bowman, and Deb Swanegan; significant other, Cathy Lynch; and his beloved cat, Nugget.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ollie Wilkey.

Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Jacksonville Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Max Wilkey Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 95, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
